"Do you see that?" I ask Matthew who was currently kicking rocks as we walked, watching the water.

"See wha- is that..." Matthew didn't need to finish his sentence before yelling resounded throughout the whole bay.

"The British! British ships are approaching!" One hollered frantically, hands cupped over his mouth.

It wasn't long before the British ships were within firing distance. Washington ordered us to gather our weapons, to prepare for what was coming. When the first shot hit, dirt exploded into the air. Now I sit patiently, not quite knowing what to do, my finger never leaving the trigger on my gun.

"Retreat!" A voice yells, coming from everywhere all at once. As soon as I pull myself up from the ground a shower of dirt bursts into the air. That's all it takes for me to take off running in pursuit of the other men.

I've been running for what feels like hours now. My legs are heavy and I take ragged breaths with each step I take. The British didn't stop after the first attack, no they came onto land as well, forcing us farther and farther away. I was one of the lucky ones that didn't get captured as they forced us across the Hudson, right into New Jersey.
