What is the essence of life?
Some might say light,
Some Love
Some Happiness.
But they are wrong.
Darkness is the essence of life.
Because, not everyone experiences these things.
Not everyone is lucky enough to feel love.
Not everyone has seen the light.
Some don't have the ability to feel happiness.
And once that comes around,
then you know.
You just know
that when darkness falls,
you can truley find what it means to live.
Janet closed her notebook with a sigh and stood up from the desk by her bed, she knew that soon enough her mother would call her into the kitchen to talk about the doctor's appointment she had today. The tall girl had overheard her mother talking about it on the phone the other day with, who she assumed was her father. Janet had taken a vow of silence a week ago because her mother said she couldn't go to the private school she so desperately wanted to attend.
"Oh Honey, but the school you go to is the best in the state! Why would you want to go somewhere else?"
Because of the pain it causes me.
"No reason I guess. Just a stupid idea.”
After that Janet found herself in a state of depression, dreading the end of the last week of summer. She made her way to her bedroom door where a calendar was taped to back, she put a slash through that days date. Tuesday, school starts Monday, she had six days left? She filled an A into the Wednesday box.
Janet went to the kitchen just as her mother called her name.
“JA-“Her mother started as she saw her daughters brown hair flash by the kitchen door. “Oh there you are, I need you to get ready, and we are going to see Dr. Menter.” Janet blinked at her mother, a bored expression on her face. "Don't look at me like you don't care. I hate that you've stopped talking and so I'm doing something about it!" her mother started to raise her voice, then thought better of it. "Just, go get dressed"
Janet turned and headed to her bedroom, she pulled out her favorite band shirt, Fall out Boy, and a pair of ripped skinny jeans. Not that she was really skinny enough to fit in them. She would be soon though, so might as well get used to them. Janet then pulled on a pair of combat boots and made her way down the hall. She didn't bother to brush her hair, just pull it up into a bun and that was the end of it. Janet stood by the door to wait for her mom; she put in her headphones and started playing the POP goes PUNK album she had just gotten.
"Janet! Are you ready to go?" her mother called up the stairs as she made her own way down. "Oh. You are. Sorry it took so long, let's go." she opened the door and walked out, waiting for her 15 year old to follow.
Soon enough they had gotten to the psychiatrist’s office. Janet sat in the car, staring at the building. It didn't look like a doctor's office; it looked more like that one place where she took physical therapy. It was an apartment building, like every other building. But it had a sign out front, 'Office of Dr. Menter.' and in smaller print, 'No walk ins'. Her mother stood, waiting impatiently by the car for Janet to get out.
"Janet come on." She said and waved angrily. They couldn't be late for their appointment, or else it was gone. Janet stayed silent and got out of the car; she slammed the door and walked in front of her mother into the large building. It wasn't a very dark place; it had pretty flowers and lots of books and magazines. The receptionist looked nice, her hair was up in a cute bun that must have taken at least ten minutes, and her glasses looked a little too big for her face. But, it made her seem shy and welcoming.
