Before It All

Flowers are in bloom this month. The gust of wind sent the scent of fresh lavender and tulips onto my face. It was of both irritation and sensation. The sun had just woken from its slumber and is rising from the hillside. The skies went immediately blue and clouds were as fleecy as the wool of sheep and as soft as cotton candy. You can hear the birds happily chirping on the apple tree. It was a perfect day.

I then saw John walking from the horizon; alas, breakfast. He was back from hunting ducks, deer, and even boars. Today we'll have ducks. He always does hunting at dawn. It's his "hobby" as he says yet I see profit in it but he denies and always says, "My passion for hunting can never be bought, and what I get is only for you, dear."

What a sorry excuse for killing animals. But I'm not complaining, food is food after all. Sometimes he even brought a bear and he forced me to cook it. I ranted at him all day telling to go into town and sell its pelt and meat. The day after, I saw its fur and head on the floor, the meat as a stew, and the innards as dog food. He goes berserk on this hobby of his sometimes.

"One for the fast, one for lunch, and one for supper"

He never thinks of anything after his hunt but a meal. I'm more of a maid now than of his other half. The upside is that I know that he likes my cooking even if I'm a little rubbish at it. I garden the vegetables at the backyard in my garden and he hunts the meat. A simple everyday scenario for the both of us, but we never get tired of it.

"Stewed, roasted, and one for the dog. We can't possibly eat all of those and besides, we're out of dog food. We'd need to go to the city by the end of the week."

"First of all, I'm very hungry dear. I could eat two of these raw and I might even eat half of the other; nothing left for you or the dog. Secondly, I'd still need to fix the cart up till the end of the week. Lastly, Aden's pay day would also be at the end."

"Exactly. After you've finished, we'd meet up with Aden at the market with his pay and we'd browse for needs. For the meantime, put the ducks on the kitchen. Behead and feather one while you're at it, dear."

"Gladly."

He then took off his boots and went inside the house. It was then quiet again. The rocking chair, the breeze, and me. I then realized that the birds had stopped from singing, the grass moved woozily, and my head a little light. Then the floor was getting closer to my face and I then realized I was falling.

T'was the day I lost all.
