Just for fun
Doc’s POV
The minutes went by all too slowly waiting for Darien to arrive. I knew I shouldn’t of passed him yesterday, especially after he told me Adelise moved back in. I should of known better than to release him, but I guess a small part of me was rooting for him to get through it, especially after all he’s been through.
The clocked turned over to seven and David appeared in a rush to get the appointment over, not unusual in my patients. David had only been in here a few months for his nervous breakdown at the local grocer. He had just lost his sister and handled it poorly to say the least. He and Darien were in the same wing of the facility. Only, David was released much sooner then Darien and Darien had always resented him for it.
I stopped and warned Barbra, the receptionist, to stall Darien from coming into my office while David was here and to warn the local police about the absence of Darien Winter, just a precaution.
David had just started talking when Darien busted through the door, clothes damp and bed head clearly visible. He started pleading immediately, begging for me to let it go. I tried to talk him out of the room before he saw David. He couldn’t even here me he was talking so fast.
He paused to breath and I interjected quickly, “You know I can’t let this go, you were late yesterday, Darien.” I didn’t have the heart to lie to him. “I want to work this out with you though, lets just talk in a minute, I have to finish up here,” for a brief second I looked towards David to see how he was reacting in this hostile situation. Bad move, Darien followed my gaze and glared angrily at David, he was basically a time bomb. I panicked trying to think of where I had placed my clicker.
Darien was screaming now, claiming the unjustness of this situation. I just agreed, a poor attempt to sooth him long enough for help to arrive. I found the button in my jacket pocket and tried not to draw attention as I clicked it. He noticed. Enraged he took a few steps towards me, hands in fist. I cringed thinking about the last outburst, when the nurses were just moments too late. Relief overcame me when I saw the nurse come in through the door. “Just breath, Darien, you don’t want this.” I soothed, as the nurse placed the needle in his vain. He fell into my arms like a ton of bricks, and I grabbed the desk to support myself.
After the nurses had reluctantly changed him out of his wet clothes, we placed him in his old room. It took all of my restraint not to bend down and brush the hair out of his face, telling him to sleep well, but the cameras were watching and I didn’t want to be taken off his case for being too attached.
I had to admit, after the 5 years I had looked after him, I couldn’t help but think of him like a son. He was usually a very polite well mannered person, but he was short willed when it came to controlling his illness. It overtook his actions all to quickly, verbally and physically.
I went into the monitor to watch the camera’s. It took him another thirty-five minutes to wake up, but I waited. He opened his eyes and looked around the room, confusion clear on his face. He looked down at what he was wearing and fury quickly took over. He stood up, and looked around the room.
Okay, I know I’m supposed to act official about these things, but it was pretty fucking amusing watching a 200 pound man fling a pillow at a padded wall for twenty-five minutes. His face of constipation only added to the comedy of it all.
My smile quickly washed from my face as he doubled over on the floor, I could here him sobbing now, and there was something about it, something so, sad, so relatable in the way he cried. I just wanted to hold him, to tell him things would be okay now. That I understand he feels guilty, but he had to forgive himself eventually.
Just as I was about to give in and walk into his room, jeopardizing my job, he looked at the camera. His cheeks darkened as if embarrassed. He waved sheepishly, and subtly lowered one finger at a time.
Amusement washed back over me as I looked at the man in a padded room, surrounded by feathers, face streaked with tears, smile like an idiot and flip me off. He never failed to surprise me, I’ll give him that.
