“So you finally came to your senses and decided to hang out with me,” Gil said. “How long has it been since we’ve hung out at your place? Eight, seven years? And you decide to turn off the Xbox. Seriously Jonathan!”
Today, I was really in no mood to talk or actually hang out with anybody. I was tired from playing against the Red Wings yesterday – we won, might I add. But I still couldn’t get over the fact that I saw Travis and Adam’s step–sister at the same place, together. There is something more here than I expect. Of course, I needed to talk to someone about this but there was no one that I knew that wouldn’t make fun of me.
I wasn’t going to talk to Adam, he would flip on me. Travis was of course going to pester me about wondering what his relationship is with Adam’s step–sister. The rest of my friends were dicks and would probably tell Adam about how I was feeling. The only person that I could actually trust and would actually give me an answer would be the man with the loyal name: Gilbert.
So although I was tired and didn’t want to do anything all day, I still invited him over to play some Xbox. That didn’t last long though, we played for about a minute until I was so fed up with all my feelings that I turned the Xbox off. Clearly, Gil noticed something was off with me. “It’s about Adam’s step–sister, isn’t it?”
I looked over at him. “Do you seriously know me that well?” I inquired.
“You’ve been acting strange since the moment she came along for the first game in LA. Plus Patrick has been telling me everything about you gushing your feelings out to him. He has been asking ways on how to act like he’s interested when really he wants to gouge his eyes out,” he explained.
“That makes me feel better.”
“You know she’s dating Travis,” he stated.
“I thought that.”
“How did you know?”
“I saw them on the twenty–third at Starbucks. It was just them and no one else,” I said.
Gil took a sip of his water that I so graciously got him when he came over. “I find it rather ironic how you’ve never talked to her yet you know more about her love life than Adam may ever know.”
“Adam doesn’t know?” I asked astonished.
He shook his head. “I’ve been hinting at him about them but he never cares to listen to what good ol’ Gil has to say.” He shrugged his shoulders.
“How long have they been dating?”
“Since the lock–out ended,” he answered.
I dropped my face into my hands while muttering, “Oh God.”
“Jonathan, I know that you really like her. But if she hasn’t officially met her nor do you even know your name. I don’t even think you would date a girl that may or may not know that you like her.” I looked at him. “Jon, you’re a Blackhawk. You can get any girl in probably both Canada and America. Don’t get held back by one girl.”
But I was. I was held back. I was held back by a girl that knew of my existence but not in her own life.

Slap!
Yes, I was again one of those days were I had to get out my hurt feelings, my lost thoughts, and above all, my anger. Today though, it was a lot worse than I would have ever expected. My anger was out of control. Even though I had a game tomorrow and my muscles ached and begged for me to stop I continued to let the pucks slip into the net until I had to go and retrieve them all. Then I came back and began to shoot them all over again.
The only time I actually stopped shooting the pucks when Travis yelled out at me from the bench. I turned over to him; he had the largest grin on his face. “Why are you shooting? What’s wrong with Capt’n Toews?”
“You,” I replied.
He was dumbfounded. “Me?”
I nodded. “Yes you,” I repeated.
Travis left the bench and walked across the ice until he stood right in front of me. “You are a captain to currently the hottest NHL team and I am the problem?” he asked.
“Aren’t you always?”
“It’s because I’m dating Adam’s step–sister, isn’t it?” I remained silent and began to shoot the pucks all over again. “Shooting pucks won’t make me go away. But facing me will.” I turned back to Travis, with my fingers wrapped around my stick so tight that my knuckles were turning white. “Why does it matter so much that I’m dating his step–sister? It’s not like you ever dated her,” he spat. Was that all she was referred to? Adam’s step–sister, poor girl.
“It’s just that Adam and I are like brothers. Our families are so close that I want to protect his family is danger ever crosses their path,” I said.
“So I’m danger?”
“You always were.”
“You like her don’t you?” Travis questioned. I remained silent yet again but didn’t go back to shooting the pucks. Instead, I looked back at Travis with intensity. “You say that you respect Adam that you two are like brothers. Yet, you like his step–sister. That’s sure nice.”
“I don’t like her,” I denied.
“Jonathan do something simple and tell the truth.”
“Why do you even care so much about this?”
“Because she’s my girlfriend!” he yelled. “Why are you making such a big deal about this?”
“Because I love her and she would be a lot happier with me than you!” I spat and with that, Travis was silent. He turned around and left me alone, without any further investigation.
