The thing about a relationship is that it ends. And sometimes it doesn't.
Like, take my parents for example. They dated for 7 years and they've been married for 26 years. That's called true love. That's called fate.
But what if a relationship doesn't work? Take me for an example. I've been dating a guy called Mike Johnson for 4 years. And we were almost, almost going to marry each other.
And when I say almost I mean today.
Yes, I was going to marry Mike today. But what am I doing? I'm sitting in a bar wearing my wedding dress and sipping my glass of gin and tonic.
Confused? Hell, I'm the one confused!
You see when I was getting ready for my wedding and only an hour was left my best friend/maid of honour entered looking all pink in the face and told me that Mike is missing. I didn't overreact. I almost rolled my eyes and said that he'll come around this time. Just postpone the wedding for an hour.
You'll ask why I said this time. Well okay, you see this is not the first time I am getting ready for my wedding.
When, I and Mike, completed 2 years of our relationship we went out on a date and celebrated in this really posh restaurant and all. When I was in between sipping my wine, Mike got to his knees and proposed to me out of the blue. I said yes. I mean why won't I? He is well-settled, good-looking, and well-mannered. His parents are sweet. And well he loves me.
So we planned everything. Or I planned everything. He was busy with his job. From the wedding dress to the caterers, I did everything. And on my wedding day, I found out that Mike is missing. An hour later when all the guests were gone, of course after giving me a pat on the back or some sympathetic words, he showed up looking all guilty.
After 1 month I took him back into my life. We dated again for 2 years and he proposed again. This time I took my time.
I asked him zillion times if he really wants this or not. Every time he would bob his head giving an annoyed look and then after too many bobs of his head I said yes. I was sure that this time he won't bail on me.
But well I guess I was wrong. He did bail on me. Again.
Even after an hour, he didn't show up. I called him but it went straight to voicemail. So I had nothing to do but call off the wedding.
I couldn't take the sympathy on my parent's faces or his parent's faces. So I escaped from the back of the church, switched off my phone, found a cab and made my way straight to this club.
Now I'm sitting on the bar stool, sipping a glass of gin and tonic as every person in this club gives me a weird glance. But I don't care. I'm done pleasing everyone.
It's been four hours. I've been hiding here for four bloody hours.
"Bad day huh?" Looking up I saw a girl working and making drinks behind the bar. She gave me a small smirk and took my half glass of gin and tonic from my hand. "I think you've had enough."
"Thanks," I muttered cradling my head in my hands.
"So what's your name?"
"June." I gave her a small smile which turned into a groan as a wave of nausea hit me.
"I'm Cindy. You should probably call someone."
"I don't wanna face anyone right now," I told her as I took the glass of water that she offered and sipped it.
"You'll have to face'em at some point." She shrugs and goes off to attend to some other customer.
She's right. But whom should I call? I can't exactly call my mom and dad. I can't face them. Mia, my best friend, would be all omg-he-is-such-a-jerk right now, and though I admit that I do want to curse at him right now I can't. I just want to forget about him. So that leaves me with one choice only.
I pick up my phone and speed-dial my sister Gaby.
Gabriella Joseph, a mother of one, and future mother of two is my older sister. She is married to Andrew Joseph for 3 years and they have a small boy Benedict. Now she is pregnant again with twins. She is 5 years older than me and I always run to her when I'm in a crisis. Sometimes I think she is more of a mother to me than my own mother.
"June? Are you okay?" She says as soon as she picks up.
"Yeah. Can you pick me up?" I try hard not to sound drunk but fail as a hiccup follows.
"Are you drunk?" She whisper yells and I immediately note that she is with company.
"Gaby, can you please not tell everyone that I called you and just come pick me up without asking any questions? Please?"
Exactly 15 minutes after the call, I found myself sitting in the passenger seat of her car. The only sound was the heavy breathing of Ben as he was sleeping peacefully in the back seat, unaware of the great crisis his aunt June is going through. I smiled and stroked his hair.
"Are you okay?" Gaby finally asked me. Shifting my gaze from Ben to her I stared at her. She was looking beautiful in her plum-coloured knee-length dress though her 4 months pregnant belly was hard not to miss.
I nodded and tried giving her a small smile but a tear slowly slides from my eyes.
Traitor tear.
That's when the entire dam broke.
Gaby handed me a tissue which just made me cry more. She didn't say a word. Just kept on handing me tissue after tissue. After 10 minutes and a whole box of tissues, I started to calm down.
I took a few calming breaths and realized that we had stopped moving. I eyed the small white house that belonged to Gaby and then I eyed her. I blinked to see that she was crying too.
"Oh my god, Gaby are you okay? Are you in pain? Why are you crying?"
She shook her head and muttered "stupid hormones" and something about pregnancy and stuff.
She motioned for me to get out and I obliged.
"Go. I'll bring Ben in." I say eyeing her big belly.
"Thanks." She huffs placing a hand on her belly and taking hold of a paper bag that seemed to appear from thin air. When she saw me eyeing the bag she gave me a small smile.
"Ben & Jerry. It's always good for pregnant women and heartbroken girls."
And though I was left at the altar today, and though I'm almost drunk and cried my heart out in the front seat of my sister's car, I laughed.
God, I love my sister.
