It Begins

I looked out over the street at a man that seemed to be staring at me. He was wearing clothes that made him stand out like a dog in a room of cats. He had on a long black coat and had his hair combed to the side, on his face was a remnant of a scar and sunglasses. He noticed me looking at him and he came over and stood near me and said in a voice that sounded like he had seen things I can only dream of. "Hey kid what's your name." I answered him even though I knew it wasn't very smart. "My name is Felix". He looked at me and said "I may look like I'm a creep but I'm not. I'm here to find a ride so I can warn the city of something very terrible." "Well I'm not a kid I'm 17 and I can drive you to the city if your message is important."

So now here I am in my amazing car, driving some man into the city. On the drive he started to talk to me. "I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Eli Ford. You can call me Eli or Mr.Ford" I didn't know it then but I would be spending a lot of time with Eli. We drove for a bit until we got to the edge of the city. That's when I saw it. Dead bodies were all over the ground and a few people were limping from body to body tearing bits off. "What the heck is happening?!?" I exclaimed. "Crap. I wasn't in time. They made it before I did. Looks like it happened a while ago." Eli was muttering. Then one of the limpers looked at our car and started running at us...well as fast as it could go. I got a good look as it started slamming on the glass.

It looked like a human that was burned and had been savaged by every hostile creature on earth. It had bits of flesh hanging of off it's face and it's clothes were all ripped but still clinging on. I looked at Eli to see what he would say. He didn't say anything but dug through his bag and pulled out a gun. He handed one to me and loaded another. Then He climbed out of the car and shot the zombie guy in the forehead. "Well Felix are you going to help me or sit there." He said.

I didn't know what to do so I got out and pointed the gun at one of the zombies and shot it. The bullet hit it square in the forehead and it collapsed. "Looks like you're a natural at this" he said with an impressed look on his face. We kept shooting until all the creatures in the area were dead. He walked over to the nearest store and climbed through the broken window. I followed him and asked what we were going to do. "Well the city has fallen so I failed my mission so to make up for it I'm going to do my best to keep you alive until we can start a safe haven for anyone else we pick up on the way." It seemed like a good plan so I grabbed some stuff.

When we stepped out of the store Eli looked the same with more weapons and food in his bag. I had a lot more new stuff when I stepped out as well. I was wearing a jacket similar to Eli's and had a nice new leather backpack. On my belt was the pistol that Eli had given to me and a hunting knife. Beside my backpack was a hunting rifle. Our backpacks held more stuff. Mine had some non perishable food, ammo, another pistol and a med pack. Eli had more food as well and ammo, but he also had some chlorine tablets so we could purify any water we found. We looked at the car but it wasn't there anymore in it's place was a stick in the ground with a piece of paper nailed to it. On the paper it had a message. Eli read it and showed it to me while he looked around.

Hello Eli,
I see you made it to the city. We don't want you leaving on us so we took your car. If you want it you can come take it, but we won't let you leave without a fight. If you don't want to do that I guess you can sneak out of the city and try to hide. But we will find you.

Your pals, The Deathwatch.

When I was done looking at the note my face was pale. "What should we do Eli." I asked. "Well we could sneak out of the city and try not to get caught by the Deathwatch or get mauled by the zombies." Eli said. "That's your plan? Hide?" I said. He stopped and looked at me. "You don't know what they would do to us if they caught us. They would inject us with chemicals to see what our reaction is or rip our eyes out. Possibly both." I looked at him with a shocked look on my face. "I know because I was part of their society a long time ago. They killed my friend and forced me to join." He said with regret on his face. I closed my mouth and followed him as we made our way through the city. We were a few blocks to the edge when we saw a blockade. The blockade was made of men in strange helmets and trucks. I looked closely and saw some flood lights set up and with the light I saw my car. "It's the deathwatch." Eli whispered to me. He took a detour through the mall. What a mistake it was.
