It's 2050 and a new generation of vampires have been formed. We are called the Lamia, which is simply vampire in Latin, nothing extraordinary. With the new generation have come new rules and new consequences. The most major rule now is you can only feed from one person, your assigned feeder. In the end it's obvious they will die, it's the way things are meant to be. I call it fate. The only humans that should know we exist are our feeders. If the truth got out, well you don't want to know the details.
It was midnight. The moon is shining brightly, slicing through the thin clouds. I heard a knock at my door. In case you're wondering, yes I live in an ordinary house. Apart from the fact the house is in a town full of vampires. We are in a large group of concealing mountains, our safest choice. I pull back the door to see an Official waiting impatiently and holding a clipboard.
"There is a meeting in Town Square in 30 minutes. All must attend," he stated.
"What's it about?" I question curiously.
"The Officials are assigning feeders," he answered.
"Oh okay, thanks," I smile brightly.
He doesn't return one. He simply crosses off my name (Hazel Winter) from the list and walks down the pathway to the next house of many he will have to visit. It must be a very boring a repetitive job. I sigh and return to my bedroom so I can change for the Feeder's ceremony. I was hoping for a relaxed night but tonight is the night when the new rule becomes official; you can only feed from your feeder. I pull a pair of black jeans and a black hoodie out of my wardrobe. I pull them on and look in the mirror. I flash my razor teeth at my reflection. I can even scare myself sometimes.
Twenty minutes later I am standing in a large huddle, actually more like a crowd of vampires. There is a large stage set up in the middle of Town Square. I peer around and see a large group of people who must be human on the other side of the stage. You can tell by the shade of their skin, dark compared to our powdery white. They look really nervous and are shaking because of the cold. I can hear individual conversations.
"This is creeping me out," a human whispered.
I don't blame them. It must be really scary knowing your about to become a vampires food source.
Mr. Debb makes his way up onto the stage and taps the microphone. It makes a huge sound and the humans wince. Mr. Debb is the controller of the whole town, the top Official. He coughs to clear his throat and leans in towards the microphone.
"Welcome Lamia Vampires. Welcome to our Feeders Ceremony," he begins. Everyone was extremely quiet.
"Lamia, when I call your name, come forward to collect your feeder," he continued.
I suppressed a snicker. They made it sound like we were picking up take-away fast food. Mr. Debb read down a list, calling up every vampire and assigning them a human. The vampires collected their feeder and walked off stage. I waited patiently for my name to be called. It felt like hours till my name was recited, "Hazel Winter".
I walked gracefully onstage and awaited my feeder. An official ushered a human onto the stage.
"Aaron Baker," the same official announced.
