Kesia Ongandzi's parents were very spiritual people. Her mom did yoga every Saturday and was obsessed with Zen Buddhism. Her dad built a mini-pagoda in their backyard and visited Japan every year. But their interest in Asian spirituality seemed more of a fetish than a true appreciation for the complexity of East Asian culture and religion. 

However, her mom was a truly African woman. She made sure that Kesia knew everything there was to know about her culture. The myths, the language, the enchantments, the legends--everything. Kesia's mother was of the Ngie tribe in Cameroon, and her father was Bamileke. Even though her father did not know much about his own culture, the Internet helped with that. All in all, Kesia was knowledgeable and confident about who she was. Which would definitely come in handy...
