I started writing this story 4 years ago in my 11th grade English class and I still only have two full chapters written. It has completely and totally changed in that time, And I am proud of what it has become. None of it would be possible without a few very important people, and I would like to take this time to acknowledge them and their contributions to the work.
First and foremost, I would like to thank Mrs. Karen Jackson Petersen, for teaching me the power that language holds, and for supporting and mentoring me in the early stages of this book while I was still developing my voice as a writer. Your critique and criticisms have been integral to the characters and story line, and the book and myself are forever indebted to you for this.
To John Rose, Jr, for teaching me empathy, humility, understanding and morality. You are undoubtedly the best man I have ever known, and I am proud to call you my brother. James' thoughts and actions are greatly influenced by you, as is his ungodly awkwardity and his charming wit. You have been my best friend for a decade, and your influence on my life cannot be overstated. I would not be half the man I am if it were not for you.
To Megan Shaffer, for being a wonderful listener, and more so, a wonderful sister. Thank you for listening to me brainstorm aloud all those times we hung out and ate bean dip and watched Friday Night Lights. I hope you forgive me for making you a lesbian in the book.
To Jessica Pooley, for being my Chemistry lab partner, for letting me copy your homework and study guides, for drinking coffee with me in the morning and hearing me bullshit about "my novel". You kept me humble and I probably wouldn't have graduated if it weren't for you!
To Jessie Smith, for teaching me about love, and time.
And finally, to Elisabeth Campanelli, who this book is dedicated to, may you rest in peace. Thank you for the initial inspiration to write this book, and for the way you made the world a more beautiful place. You are sorely missed, Angel.
