"I don't think this is a good idea, Cyn."
"Well if you're going to be a baby about it, go hang out with Mordo."
The younger boy whined, brushing soft strands of white from his pale face. Brilliant red eyes blinked a few times as he watched the other boy. "This isn't how I wanted to spend the end of my day off."
Cynric mocked the younger as pushed on a few loose boards on the old, rundown barn. After a moment of struggling with them, he managed to create a small opening to crawl into. "Come on, Cae. I promise nothing is going to eat you."
"Well last time you told me that, something almost-"
"Just get in here." Cynric hissed, scowling at the other boy. Caelum sighed and grudgingly followed him in, being mindful of every step he took. His only day off for this week and here he was crawling into a broken building. The inside of the barn smelled of must and old hay, broken pieces from the ceiling and fences were scattered around the dirt floor. He was confused as to why the older boy wanted to show him this. It wasn't like Cynric to enjoy things like this but he never questioned what the older did most of the time. He followed the other through the barn, glancing up when the setting sun would peek in through holes in the roof.
"Where exactly are we going?" The younger boy asked, skipping ahead to catch up to the older.
Cynric didn't reply, taking them to the far back wall of the barn. A ladder was placed there, leading up to a small loft. The boy watched as the older began to climb up it into the opening.
"This isn't safe, Cyn!" He pouted when there still was no response. Sighing to himself, the white haired boy slowly climbed up, feeling the ladder bend and creak beneath his weight. If he fell and got hurt, Cynric wouldn't hear the end of it.
Reaching the top, Caelum poked his head into the hatch, looking around. The side of the loft they were at looked sturdy, but he could see on the other side that there were holes and loose boards. Cynric was sitting against the wall, head tipped back and looking out of a hole in the top of the roof. The younger crawled up, slowly making his way to the other boy.
"What are we looking at?"
"The sun setting."
"Why?"
"Because it's not raining for once. Now shut up."
There was a loud sigh but the younger boy did as he was told, mimicking the other's posture. His eyes closed half way, watching as relaxing colors of red, orange and dark purple swirled across the sky. A few stars began to shine as the sun sunk lower.
"Do you think they miss us? Me and Mordy?"
Cynric blinked a few times, trying to think of a good way to answer the boy's question. "I don't know if the dead can miss anyone."
"Oh," Caelum frowned, pulling his knees to his chest. "But if they could?"
"I'm sure that they would."
"I miss my mom."
"I know you do."
The boy's sadness filled Cynric's mind, watching as memories of the boy's parents flashed across his mind. It had been a year since the accident but it didn't relieve any of his guilt.
The two sat in silence, watching as the sun slowly drifted away and the moon took it's place. Caelum placed his hand on the floor between them, feeling comfort when the older boy reached down to take his hand in his own, squeezing gently. He felt safe in the older's presence. Cynric had become the one person that Caelum depended heavily on for protection and for affection, becoming his rock of safety when the days were too much to handle. The older boy was the only one he trusted in the house and wouldn't stay away from him for too long.
