Chapter 5

Zainab sat on her bed, surrounded by all tokens of fake affection presented to her on her birthday. As a child, she shouldn't have cared for whether they really did love her, or whether making an impression on her, whether they wanted to prove their sincerity to Zainab, but was it their sincere care or sincere pity that she wanted, she shouldn't have cared. But she committed a mistake. She looked past the porcelain dolls and the flashy ribbons, to the intentions of her relatives.
"Poor child", they might have thought, "such heinous parents...no one to take care of her"
She wasn't a poor miserable little creature. She had her Lord. The Almighty. She bowed to Him and in turn was raised above any other In front of the world. She believed that. She had faith in Allah. She didn't want anyone to sympathise with her. Not her uncle and aunty. Not her grandmother. Not her parents. She was fine alone. Perfect, really. For in solitude, she found peace. She found taqwa in her loneliness. But these "gifts" were a constant reminder that she was just portrayed as an emblem of misery. A poor child.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a loud bang of the door. Apparently, father came back from his late night parties. At that time, Zainab wished for the millionth time that the walls of her house were sound-proof. There it was all over again.
"How could you!?! Even today? It was your daughter's birthday!" Mother hissed.
"Oh. Yeah. Happy birthday to her. I'm hungry. Get me some food." Father said, his voice slurpy because of the funny liquid he used to drink.
"You're not even sorry. You should be ashamed of yourself, you pathetic freak!" Mother exclaimed.
"Mind your words, woman. You're going ahead of yourself." Father said, deadly quiet.
"What are you going to do, huh? All you can do is get wasted!"
It was after that Zainab tuned out her parents, put a pillow on her head and pray to Allah to settle this all. She eventually fell asleep.
In the morning, mother was off to school and father left for office. Peace prevailed. It was bound to happen because she had the support of her Lord. It always did.
But not for long.
I'm soooooo sorry for taking this long, please don't kill me* sob sob*
But hey c'mon, shit happens, cut the girl some slack. I know I know you might have forgotten the story by now and everything but I was busy😭😭😭😭
