The morning before the train ride, a long time ago; in August of 1881, Chicago, a ten and a half
year old girl named Jana woke to the sound of a rooster. Humming to herself, Jana quickly
dressed and set the tea, milk, and water mix on the stove. Just then there was a knock at the
little door to their wagon.
Jana opened the top half, "Hello?" There stood a man who she barely recognized as the post
man. He handed Jana a letter and was off before she could say 'thank you'. Jana turned the
letter in her hands and added wood to the fire. It was time to wake Lucy.
"Lucy," she said in a singsong voice as she hung up her dress and set Lucy's hair ribbons next
to it, "you need to wake up now." Lucy grumbled about it, but she got dressed and helped Jana
finish breakfast. By the time they were done Baba had woken up and they all sat down for
breakfast.
