"I'm looking for my great-aunt," I say to him. "She was born in Mississippi - Biloxi, Mississippi!" The man froze, turning ever so slightly as if to hear me slightly. "She was admitted to the asylum there after my great-grandfather's second wedding. He was paying a bearded man to kill her just like he'd done to her mother! He didn't get her, though, she was sent to the asylum in "
"Asylums haven't been used in over thirty years," He said kindly. "You must be mistaken."
"I'm in one." I roll my eyes. The doctor began to get up, about to leave my ward. "Please, Dr. Cullen - I just want to talk to her -"
"I don't know who you're talking about," Dr. Cullen said kindly, turning back around but staying by the door.. "But you are making quite a scene. I can help you look for your aunt -"
"Her name is Mary Alice Brandon," I say. "She goes by Alice now. You know her, Dr. Cullen - I know that you know her!"
"Mary Alice Brandon," Dr. Cullen repeats, shaking his head sorrowfully. "No, I'm afraid I do not know a Mary Alice - or an Alice, for that matter."
"Can you please stop treating me like I'm crazy?" I said lowly. "I'm trying to find the only family I have left."
Dr. Cullen's gold eyes studied my face. "I never did get your name."
"How was your day, Carlisle?" A pixie-like girl asks, cheerfully. Mary Alice Brandon, I recognize her from my mother's pictures. It was like she hadn't aged a day. The only difference between the two girls was that this Alice had choppy hair, like it was hacked off. Which I knew was the case; it'd been cut off in fear that the patients of the asylum would get typhoid.
"Strange, actually," Dr. Cullen replies. "The patient I was supposed to treat - the one who's family had recently passed - she was talking about you, Alice. She called you her great-aunt. You had looked into your family, hadn't you? Don't they still live in Biloxi?"
"Yeah," Alice frowned. "What'd she say?"
"Just that she needed to find you." Dr. Cullen hesitated. "Would you like to see her?"
Alice shook her head, "No. Just wondering what she said. What was her name?"
"My name is Evangeline," I say, focusing back on him and slipping out of my vision. "Tell Alice that my sister use to live in Biloxi."
"I told you, Evangeline, I don't know an Alice."
"Why are you lying to me?" I asked. "You'll go home tonight and she'll ask you how your day was. You'll say "strange" and then tell her about me. You'll ask her if she'd looked into it already and she'll tell you that I still live in Biloxi. But I don't. My mother lived in Biloxi before my family was murdered. When my mother died, my father stuck me in here. That was two years ago. Tell Alice that's why she missed me."
Dr. Cullen's face stayed passive. "Evangeline, I do not know and Alice. But if i see your aunt, I will tell her. How does that sound?"
"Like you're patronizing me," I said. "I'm not crazy."
"Of course you're not, you're sick and you're going to get better."
"If you're my doctor, we're going to have a problem because you're treating me like I'm delicate. I'd actually appreciate it if you'd talk to me normally." I scowl.
"I'd appreciate respect," Dr. Cullen says. "And I am not patronizing you, Evangeline, I'm trying to understand you."
"Why?" I ask, my tone considerably more kind. "Everyone says I'm crazy. I told you why I ended up here."
"Actually, you just told me that you're looking for your great-aunt. How long have you been looking for her?"
"Ever since my grandmother, Cynthia, passed away about seven years ago." I recall. "My grandmother and I were close."
"And you were twelve at the time of her death. How old was she?"
"Ninety eight," I say with pursed lips.
"What did she tell you? Why did you have to find your great-aunt?"
"That file," I pointed to the one in his hands, "It tells you that they think I see things. I see the future. For example, I know that when your birthday comes around next month, you'll go to a private island you bought for your wife - named after her even, Isle Esme. You'll go with you family. Just for a week."
"And when did you see that?"
"Last night."
"Why did you have to find Mary Alice Brandon?" Dr. Cullen repeats kindly.
"She's like me. Just like me. Right down to the electroshock therapy that is supposed to be illegal."
"They don't use electroshock therapy on you, Evangeline." Dr. Cullen almost chides.
"Yes, they do." I say, moving my hair back to show him the dark bruises on either side of my temple. Mostly, they're covered with my hair but if you look for them, they're there. "That's why I write everything down. Difference is, by law, I have to be granted personal items. She didn't."
"You don't seem crazy, Evangeline." Dr. Cullen tells me after a minute. "You seem confused."
"You're the fifth doctor in two years to call me confused," I say.
"How many doctors did you insist that they knew your great-aunt." Dr. Cullen asks.
"Touché," I shrugged. "But you're the only one. Since you actually know her."
"I'm afraid I do not." Dr. Cullen sighed. "Do you know what she looks like?"
"Sure I do, do do you."
"Evangeline."
"Fine," I rolled off my bed, crouching to pull my suitcase out from under my metal bed. Unzipping it, I pull out the thick folder on Mary Alice Brandon. I give him the most recent picture. "Most recent picture I have. It was her father's second wedding. Keep it if you want, it might trigger some of her memories."
"Or, I should keep it incase I run into her on the streets." Dr. Cullen smiles kindly.
"Now you're just mocking me."
"Evangeline isn't your real name," Dr. Cullen chides.
"I was named after my great-aunt. My name is Mary-Alice Evangeline. I go by my middle name." I shrug. "To be more specific, I go by Evan."
"I see," Dr. Cullen nods. "And your last name?"
"My mother's married name, obviously." I scoff. "Hale."
"Mary-Alice Evangeline Hale," Dr. Cullen looked surprised.
"Didn't you read my files, Dr. Cullen?"
"Not thoroughly enough apparently."
"What do you want to know, then?"
"I have a personal friend with the name Hale."
I frowned. "How? I'm the only one left. What's their name?"
"Royce, no!" My father's aunt said.
"Come on, babe, take off your coat."
The rest of my vision was gruesome.
Dr. Cullen checked his watch, "Well, our time is over for now, Mary-Alice Evangeline Hale. I will see you on Thursday."
"See you, Dr. Cullen," I say. "Tell Alice and Rosalie I said hello."
