Chapter One: Getting Ready

“I still think your so called job is stupid.” My best-friend, Ben said.

I placed my hands on my hips, and glared at him. “Benjamin Clark, I told you once and I’ll tell you once more, I need the job, and I’m good at it, so why not take it?”

He pursed his lips at me, “Still, you’re an assistant of a ‘matchmaker’. I mean what does that even mean?”

I sighed audibly. “A matchmaker is somebody who arranges relationships with people.” I responded, oddly sounding like a robot considering how many times I had to repeat it to everyone who knew about my job.

He rolled his eyes, “What do you mean you’re good at it?”

“I got you and your girlfriend together didn’t I?” I said, smirking.

He scrunched up his nose, “Yeah, but that doesn’t prove anything.”

“And Riley and her boyfriend, Eric and his girlfriend, Katie and her boyfriend… I could go on all day.”

Ben shook his head, his shaggy blonde hair falling in front of his brown eyes. “Riley and Eric’s relationships ended badly.”

“Hey,” I said puffing out my chest, “still one of three worked out.”

“They’re hanging by a thread,” he said.

I rolled my eyes, “They still haven’t broken up!”

“Yet…” he mumbled.

I glared at him, ready to respond when a familiar voice spoke up from behind me, “Are you two fighting, again?”

“No!” I defended myself at the same moment Ben said, “Yes.”

Riley—my other best-friend—laughed, as she sat beside me at our usual lunch table, “It’s a job, Ben, she still makes money, its good enough, right?”

He sighed, “You girls, always sticking at each other’s side. United forever.”

Riley and I glared at him, casted each other looks and busted out laughing. I heard him sigh and say, “You two, really?”

We stopped at the same moment both of us sighted Mr. Phil…he hated when people were happy, it was like he was put on earth to ruin other peoples days. We watched him warily as he pushed through the crowded lunch room of students. “Ugh, we are so lucky we didn’t end up having him.”

“You two are, not me…” groaned Ben, frowning at his pizza.

I almost forgot Ben had that horrible History teacher. I tried my best to hold my smirk, but it showed and he glared at me.

“So, anyways, how’s the job going?”

I groaned, “Jane’s nice and all, but sometimes her request seem a little to…maid-ish I guess. She sends me out to buy her lattes and other stuff.”

Riley rolled her eyes, “Jane annoyed me the first time I saw her, and they hired her because she looks good, and wears tight clothes.”

I nodded in agreement. “But still, she saw something in me that made her hire me as her assistant.”

“Yeah, now if I could only get a job.” Ben said, gazing off despondently.

“Why don’t you work at the ice cream parlor with me?” Riley offered, brushing her brown bangs away from her green eyes.

Ben snorted into his milk. “Yeah, that’s a great job.”

“Hey, it’s still a job.”

“True,” he said, “any openings?”
