'The highway don't care if you're coming home, but I do I do.'

Luke's POV

"I'll be careful I promise," I whisper into my girlfriends hair. Bailey is worried because I've never driven home by myself at night but I know I'll be fine. "Call me when you get home ok? I love you," she says, kissing me. "I will and I love you too." I jump in my old beat up mustang and head for home.

This isn't so bad. I'll be home in about 10 minutes thanks to this back roads shortcut I found. Wow!That guy up there is FLYING. Wait. Is he headed toward me? I try to pull off the road and out of the way but no luck. As the headlights get closer, I close my eyes and have one last thought before it all goes black. "I'm so sorry Bailey."

Bailey's POV a few hours later

I sat on my bed waiting patiently for the phone call. He should be home by now right? That's when I decided to just call him myself. Just as I pick up the phone to call Luke, it rings. The number on the screen leaves me extremely confused. "Hello?" "Yes is this Bailey?" "Yes, who is this?" "My name is Drew Walker. I work at Methodist Hospital? The family of your boyfriend, Luke asked me to call you." Oh god. "Why? What happened? Is he alright?" "Drunk driver." Those two words. Two very simple short words that changed my entire life. I raced to my car and got to Methodist in about 20 minutes. "Luke?" I searched frantically for any sign of my boyfriend. Finally, I spotted his mom and older brother sitting in the waiting room. "Bailey! Thank goodness you're here." She wrapped me in a hug and Josh simply patted my shoulder and gave me a sad smile. "Is he alright? Please tell me he's alright." "You can see him now." A doctor said. I smiled, "He's fine." His mom gave me an even sadder smile. "Honey, they're letting us in to say our goodbyes. He's not awake and he's never going to be again." she broke into tears. My heart stopped. Luke is....dying? No. This is not happening. He was at my house just 2 hours ago. I walked like a zombie toward the door to his room. When I opened it, I started crying too. He was just...laying there. Completely limp and pale. I fell to my knees next to the bed and took his freezing cold hand in mine. "I can't be saying goodbye to you right now, not when you can't even hear me or say it back. I need you to be ok. PLEASE!!" I began full on sobbing before the impossible happened. He squeezed my hand. "Bay, it'll be alright." He whispered hoarsely. "I'm not gonna make it but that doesn't matter you have to keep living ok?" I choked and nodded looking up into his broken brown eyes. "Promise me." he said. "I promise," I barely whispered, "I love you...so much." "I love you too." I kissed him one more time before sitting back. His eyes fluttered shut again before the heart monitor flat lined. My choked sobs became impossibly louder. Doctors and nurses rushed in, sending me out. They didn't know that when they sent me out of that hospital room, they were sending me into a world I wasn't anywhere near ready to live in. Not without him.

'I can't live without you I can't live without you baby."
