Chapter 1:

"It's over," she said, teary-eyed.

"She means nothing to me!"

"Then why did you get my sister pregnant in the first place!" The words hung in the air. Nobody talked or moved, it was deadly silent. Then, he took a step forward and their faces were only inches apart.

"I love you," he tried to assure. He grabbed her hands and held them close to his chest where his heart was.

"She needs a husband and that baby needs someone to call Dad. He or she deserves a father! We can't be together, James! Do you get that?" It was too hard. Too hard to watch his face fall as she she walked away. When did life ever get this complicated, she thought.

"Dillys, wait!" he chased after her. She ran, she ran as fast as her short legs could take her to prevent from taking the conversation any further, knowing she would give in and back out on her plan to save a family. She couldn't do that to her sister, rid the child of a father. She agreed with herself to suffer and make the people around her happy, everyone except herself. She could handle that. It was better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all. She loved James but he belonged with someone else. She had to let him go whether it was the right or wrong thing to do, she had to.

She squated in the middle of the road to catch her breath. Puffs of smoke formed in front of her face as winter rolled in. It was getting colder and she needed to get back to her house, but that meant going back. In the direction of the fight she just had, back to who she loved.

Everyone has at least one secret that would break your heart. Her sister and James have a baby, that was their secret that broke Dillys's heart and this love she has for James, is her secret that would break their heart. The only difference was that she was going to keep her secret, forever. It was her dirty little secret.
