                             For The Night

                                Prologue

“Zayn.”

It was a simple command, a summoning to the guards. I had been in the garden with my sisters, my mother on the bench with Safaa in her lap.

I should have known something was up, by the emotions etched on her face. She struggled to keep my sister on her lap. I know now her face was hit with pain as I walked into the guards.

I traveled down the corridors of our family palace. All the pictures of past rulers hung proudly on the walls. Finally we came to a halt, in front of two grand doors, leading into as I knew as the leaders bedrooms. Or my mother and fathers room.

 “Go on, Zayn.”

Breathing in as much air as I could inhale, I squared my shoulders back, reaching for the handles. When I entered, all the curtains were drawn, holding the sunlight from seeping through the windows. The only light coming from the candles scattered around the dark room.

The atmosphere or energy in the room was depressing, mournful. Something wasn't right. Everything was off in the space.

 “Zayn, come.”

The voice came from behind the curtains hung from the ceilings around the bed in the middle of the room. I circled the bed, finding the small opening between the sheets and sliding between them, to the bed.

A man sat upon the bed, leaning against the head board. Pillows of all shape, size, and color laid behind him and sheets and sheets draped around my fathers body.

I hadn't seen my father for a couple of days. My mum would say he had the estate and realm to worry about and wouldn't be attending dinner. She had lied. He looked sick, he was sick.

 “How have you been son?”

I couldn't bring myself to look away from him. His eyes contained no spirits, no life to them. All of his living sucked out of him. His body was weak and broken from all the years he had served to his land.

 “Good, Ab.”

I mustered everything I had, to say those two words. At that point I was starting to crack.  Seeing my father in that position was something that has never left my memory. Seeing him so strong all my life and then to see him barely living was something very difficult for me to comprehend.

 “How are you feeling, Ab?”

He chuckled, positioning himself further up the head board.

 “Not too well, Zayn.”

My father was always babbling about one day leaving our land and people. And how that day I would have to step up to the plate, showing the worlds that I have royal Malik blood in myself. Thinking back, I never thought that day would have come so fast.

“What does your words mean Ab?”

His breaths were slow as he grasped my hand in his own. The grip around my hands tightened as he spoke to me.

“It means Sultan Yester is no more.”

My face hardened at his words, everything I was before that evaporated as I took in his words. As each minute passed his clutch around my hand relaxed, until my hands were the ones embracing his. Tears escaped my eyes, running down my skin.

Unclasping his fist from my own, I placed it next to his side, silently chanting a prayer before escaping the mournful room. Once outside the door, I erased all my tears, sniffing at the floor.

“What do you purpose we do, Emir?”

The Council Men, or the elite team that was at my fathers side, held a steadfast face with a stern expression.

“What do you command us to do?”

I stumbled over my words, stuttering with all the emotions I felt.

“Inform my family of the Sultans death and tell my mother to meet me in the Sultan's study for the details of the burial. Send letters to all the nations of the death. And have the palace servants prepare for my coronation tomorrow.”

 “Yes Edm-

“Sultan, I am now Sultan Zayn.”

I gave him and acknowledging nod, passing him while I walked down the corridor. From that moment everything changed in the Realm of the Barren Lands. The Nation flourished and soon became one of the top Worlds it was the Golden Age.

I was once told what the world use to be before the big war happened. It was high in tecnology, there were few Countries that lived under absloute power. The war was before my time and my fathers, it was some kind of awe to behold. There was no night, because the effects of fires and bombs going off lit the world around. Something happened after that war though, it resulted in reconstruction of the World. All current leaders at the time gathered to discuss the details of the reconstruction. All agreed to a treaty that is still in stand today, all got lands to rule over, and people to instruct. There are parts in the kingdoms that lack tecnology compared to the Cities, everything now is but a mix of new, old, and future customs.

I was merely thirteen when I came into power. An underestimated age that has so many problems circling it is impossible to think I had not yet experienced a scandal until now.

AN: Slightly edited. There's bound to be some mistakes. My first story and I'm proud that it is a Ziall story and a Narry story too. The endgame is undecided at the moment, but I'm favoring towards ziall.
