The Game

The warm smell of pizza wafted over to us, teasing those who didn't have their slices yet. "Welcome to the best pizza place ever," I said, looking at Lav.
"Smells great!" She exclaimed. "Look! There's a chess table! We are so playing after pizza."
"Sounds like a deal," I responded, glad she liked chess as much as I did.
We walked to the counter and a friendly young cashier took our order. Lav pulled out her wallet and paid for the meal.
I led my new roommate to a nice table by the window. Someone brought our greasy pizza minutes later, and we took our first bites.
"This is amazing. This is the best thing I've ever had."
I nodded. "I knew you would like it. Everyone does."
Eventually, we finished the pizza, threw our trash out, and moved to the chess table.
"Ready to lose?" She taunted, raising an eyebrow with a smile.
  "Are you?" I asked back.
She laughed and moved her piece forward. I did the same.
We exchanged turns over and over, our glances fixed on the game. To focused to notice, she said something.
  "Checkmate."
I looked up at her and looked down at the board. She was good.
Lav ended up winning. Afterwards, we indulged in a long conversation about chess and about what we liked to do.
"I love to write. It's my favorite thing. One day, I want to write for Broadway. You know, write the plays and stuff."
  This girl has big dreams.
I like her. She was a great choice.
We walked back to her car after we finished our conversation.
It's crazy how fast time flies. The clock in her car read 3:47 pm.
She drove back to the building and I opened the door. We walked inside the door, her work bag still on the floor by her door.
"I have to do some stuff for work. I'll talk to you later."
"Thanks for lunch, Lav. Talk to you later."
With that, she walked into her room, and shut the door.
I flopped down on the couch and turned on the tv.
