Chapter 1

I was thirteen. My parents had decided to send me to a "prestigious boarding school to further my education". That wasn't the case. They wanted to get rid of me.  Mother hated children and Father was always too drunk to care. I stayed out of their way, but I was still a nuisance.
Mother received my letter of acceptance to this boarding school just before supper one night.
"Sheridan, dear, your father and I have enrolled you in a prestigious boarding school to further your education." She spoke in her best caring-mother voice. "Your term will begin in one week. We will take you there tomorrow night so you have enough time to adjust to the new place. I'll help you pack after supper."
"Yes ma'am. Thank you Mother." Don't get me wrong, I loved my parents, but not as a child should love a parent. I thought of them as the providers of food and shelter, but nothing more.
We packed my belongings within an hour. As I drifted off to sleep, I considered the events of the day as I always did, and I chose the word which I would add to the chaos of words that is the world.
That day's word was escape.

Mother woke me early the next morning and we drove to the train station. There left was very little conversation, but in my family, a lack of conversation was normal, even expected. Father left the car just long enough to give me my bags before immediately returning to his seat.
"Goodbye Sheridan. See you next summer," called Mother from the car window.
"Goodbye Mother, Father."
