Empty and tired.

Those were how her eyes looked like when they greeted the white ceiling. She blinked a few times before focusing on the environment around her. There was an IV drip beside her and she was covered with white sheets. A small bench with a white door nearby was on the opposide of the room and a television was in front of her, the blackness of the screen slightly reflected her lethargic state. A small window was probably nearby as she could feel the bright light shining through. There were other beds, all covered with white pillows and blankets, but they were empty. Almost as though they have never been touched before.

She was in a hospital ward.

She heard someone beside her so the girl tilted her head very slightly to her left to see who was making that sound. Not to her surprise, she found a woman who looked like she was her thirties rambling on about something to herself. She wore a lab coat and had her hazel hair tied up to a bun. The exhausted girl couldn't think much as she was still very confused with everything, but the first thing that came to mind was--

"...Mom?"

Though her voice was cracking, it was enough to startle the woman and her eyes immediately darted to the girl. A small gasp escaped the woman as she dropped all the papers she was holding onto the nearby table and got up. She instinctively put her hands on the girl's arms and said,

"Oh my goodness, my sweet baby. Y-You're awake!" The woman smiled warm-heartedly and tears could be seen on the corner of her eyes. "Do you... Do you remember anything? A-Anything at all?"

The girl processed what the woman said for a while and slightly shook her head. She wondered for a moment the question the woman asked: why couldn't she remember anything? She couldn't even remember her own name. The girl was about to go back into her thoughts before the woman spoke up again.

"That's good," She let out a sigh of relief as she sat back on the chair before moving on.

"Wh... What's my... name?" The girl was finding it slightly hard to speak at the moment, but she had to ask that question. It's like taboo to not even know your name.

"Oh, your name, yes..." The woman suddenly had guilt spread all over her face. She tensed up a bit but she still answered. "Your name is Nahoko Veronica. You're four years old this year, and you're Japanese. And I am your mother." She smiled at the last part, but while saying her supposed daughter's name, she said it in a very cautious and heavy manner.

"Nahoko... Vero... Nica..." The girl repeated her mother's words. But when her mother heard the last half of her daughter's apparent name, she froze on the spot. She felt her blood stopped circulating and everything went cold. But that was just for a brief moment. The woman quickly recovered back just smiled at her daughter.

"If you're... my mother, th-then what about m-my dad...?"

"Y-Your dad... Uhm-- He-- Well, you see--" The woman stuttered a lot when the subject of her father arose before she took a deep breath and continued. "Your father's name is Nahoko Ryuji. He, uh... recently left us. Took a bunch of money and just walked out of our lives. Gone. Vanished. Not a single trace of that stupid man was ever left behind. He left the two of us all alone." Though her words sounded harsh, her tone spoke something else. The woman sounded like she was grieving and her voice was cracking towards the end. She took a tissue out of her pocket and dabbed her eyes.

The girl looked at her supposed mother and thought of nothing when she said that. After all, she can't remember anything. So she can't possibly know how he looks like. All that has been told so far were just background stories. She has a mother and a father who left them. But... was that all? She could've sworn there was one more person whom the supposed mother hasn't spoken about. The girl was probably wrong, but she really felt that she was related to someone else.

"Only... the two of us? I-- I thought there was one more... person o-or relative that--"

"No, no, no!" The woman suddenly retorted back. Her calm and worried look suddenly did a flip and she became very edgy and cautious. "You do not have a brother nor a sister, understand? You're an only child and the minute you're okay to be discharged, we're going to go home, and only the two of us, okay? No relative or any other person is going to come back or anything like that at all!" The woman looked at the little girl and her voiced boomed with sudden anger. The little girl was slightly shocked but nonetheless, more questions popped into her mind.

"D-Discharged? W-Wait... why was I in th-this... hospital in the f-first pla--"

"Shh, shh, shh." The woman interrupted her again. "You're surely still very tired, so go and rest. I'll check on you again soon, okay? Rest well, dear." She gently kissed the little girl's forehead and left the hospital room, leaving the girl alone to her thoughts.

Once the woman was outside the room, she took out her phone and quickly dialed a number. She stood outside the room and waited for someone to pick up the other end of the line. When the person finally picked up, the woman started looking at the papers and started talking.

"Hello? Yes, hi. Professor Archeletta here, reporting the update about Vero-- I mean, Experiment 0615... Yes, no issues at all. She's forgotten everything already. I've informed her of her new background and I'll discharge her after a few weeks... As for Ex0614, I'll talk to her later this evening. For now, keep monitoring her and see if there're any changes made. Sudden movements or breathing must be reported to me... What're you talking about, stupid? I'm going this far because she's my daughter! Now get back to your post and tell Professor Kanou what I said." And that was all she said before cutting the line and shoving her phone into her pocket.

That was the last memory the little girl had. Nothing beforehand could've been remembered. Nothing... at all.
