Chapter 1: The Little Monsters

I heard a light giggle followed by a soft padding of footsteps scampering down the hall just outside my door, effortlessly creating a soft smile to appear across my lips. I rolled onto my stomach nestling my pale face into my soft pillow before puffing out my cheeks with air in defeat. I knew I would never be able to go back to sleep now as my foggy dream-state seemed to disappear out of my grasp. 

I blew out a soft gust of air before sitting up in my small bed while my thin covers unraveled around my body. I stretched out like a feline smiling to myself as I heard the sharp cracks break the silence in my warm room before sighing in relief. I rubbed the sleep from my dark blue eyes before clearing the knots from my deep ruby, almost violet colored unruly locks. I stretched my muscles trying to get my blood flowing before I crawled out of my bed and curled my toes into the thick carpet. I opened my door and ventured out into the familiar small apartment towards the kitchen as my stomach growled at me in defiance.

"Kat, what did I say about wearing more clothes around the apartment?" A deep voice called out from the living room. I rolled my eyes as I walked into the small kitchen ignoring my brother in-law's stern voice.

"No one else is here Shane, why does it matter? Are you starting to doubt you chose the right sister again?" I shot back with a cheeky grin painted across my lips as I teased him. I peeked my head around the half wall just in time to see him shake his head with his own grin overflowing his handsome face. 

"You wish Kat." He rebuttaled making me smirk to myself before I looked down at my black sports bra and matching booty shorts silently agreeing with him. I shrugged the thought off as I searched for some cereal as my stomach reminded me what was truly important. 

"Besides bro, It's hot as balls in here." I continued our banter before leaning back into his line of sight so I could look into his dark eyes. "I wonder whose fault that is." I taunted smiling when I received his frustrated grimace. 

"Language." His deep voice all but growled back at me in annoyance making me chuckle. 

"Sorry DAD. And all I said was balls." I cheekily reminded the older male with a wink. I swore he was about to snarl at me knowing how much he hated me calling him dad, but I was instantly distracted by a high pitched squeal of delight. The shriek was my only warning before small arms encircled around my pale legs almost knocking us to the ground below. 

I smiled down at my beautiful six year old niece who looked like a perfect little replica of my older sister with her raven black locks that highlighted her complexion so that her fair skin seemed to glow with innocence. Equipped with her big bright blue eyes and with her pouty red lips it was easy to see how she perfected the 'puppy dog' look down to a science. I picked up the tiny angel who had me happily wrapped around her little finger in my arms before setting her on my hip.

"Good Morning Mina." I smiled down at her before placing a kiss on her soft, ivory cheek.

"Mornin' Rena!" She smiled back up at me making me chuckle down at her in adoration."Whatcha doing?" She softly questioned, the tooth she lost a few days back gave her a slight lisp that only added to her natural adorableness while her big blue eyes widened with interest making me bite back another smile.

"Just looking for some breakfast sweetie." I tapped her tiny, button nose before I continued my search through the cupboards.

"You know, daddy made us eggs and bacon for breakfast." She sneakily whispered in her bell-like voice softly into my hair hiding her face as laughter danced in her words.
