It's three o' clock in the afternoon and I've been walking downtown for the past six hours all by myself not minding the sweltering heat of the sun burning in my face.
It hasn't rained for months now. I heard from the news that it is caused by the El Nino season. I live in a tropical country and we only have two seasons in a year here. There's the dry season that extends from January up to May. And there's the rainy season which happens from June to December.
With this scorching heat, you would think that it's summer right now. But, no. It's the month of September. My birthday is only a couple of days ahead.
And just last week, my dear mother died.
They say that once your mother passes away, things will no longer be the same. And I couldn't agree more with that since my life has changed dramatically ever since my Mom left us.
Just yesterday, I officially dropped out of college. I'm supposed to be graduating in two years time but I'm pretty much aware now that there are many things more important than receiving my diploma.
My Mom is dead. My father is sick. And I have a younger sister who is three years my junior. She will be graduating from grade school this March and for her to receive her diploma, I will have to sacrifice mine.
You see, we are not that well-off. My sister and I might be studying in private schools but that was only possibe because of our mother. And now that she's gone, we can no longer keep up with the finances.
Our mother used to be the breadwinner of the family. She worked as a nurse in a small private clinic for a living. Her salary wasn't much but it was enough to put food on the table and send me and my sister to private schools.
As for my father, you might be wondering as to why he wasn't the one who took a job to sustain his family's needs. Well, my father could have done that if not due to the fact that he has been suffering from pneumonia for the past few years.
So my mother's salary would go straight to the family's finances which specifically included my sister and I's tuition fees, electric and water bills, food, and father's medicines. There wasn't any spare which she could keep for herself. None would be left to buy her a new set of cothes or even a new bag.
My eyes suddenly become watery as I think of my mother. She was one selfless woman. She didn't deserve what happened to her.
I stop walking as a sign from another store reads "Sanora's Flower Shop" comes into view.
Once inside, the sweet flowery scent welcomes me, and the lady behind the counter greets me with a smile.
