Draco Malfoy said goodbye to his family and got on the train, which would lead him to Hogwarts, his new school, where he would study magic. His family were known for being pure-blood. He knew if he didn't get into Slytherin his father would be furious. He tried hiding how nervous he was, as he looked for a place to sit. He found a free compartment so he sat down and stared outside the window. There were a lot of people on the trainstation, they were waving and had huge proud smiles on their faces. His parents were not like that. He knew that they loved him, but not in the same way, not in a way that would make them seem weak, that showed they had something to lose. His father always told him family and heritage is of most importance, but he never showed much affection.
Draco sat alone, sinking into his own thoughts, when someone quietly knocked on the compartment door, which he had closed. He turned his head and saw a girl with bushy brown hair, looking nervously at him.
-Sorry, but everywhere else is full, do you mind me sitting here?-she asked.
-Sure.-Draco lifted up his shoulder and looked out of the window again, the train was now going fast pass the beautiful scenery. He had no intention of paying any attention to the girls, who sat on the seat facing him.
-By the way, I'm Hermione, Hermione Granger, and you are..?
-Draco.-he replied and rolled his eyes-Draco Malfoy.
-Pleasure.-she smiled. He really didn't feel like talking, but obviously the girl was eager to talk to him.-Are you nervous about going to Hogwarts?
-Of course not!-he tried to sound as honest as possible.
-Well, it's not that obvious, everyone is nervous. But most of them don't even know what the school looks like! Of course, they haven't read the history of the school or anything about it whatsoever. Can you believe it?-he realised the girl talked fast and had said too much for such a short time.
-Shocking.-he replied saracstically, but she didn't seem to notice and went on talking.
-I know right? I have been waiting for so long to come here. I hope I do good.
-Mhm.-Draco muttered, hoping that she would shut up soon. Though it was amusing to him how excited she was.
-You're not very talkative, are you?-she laughed. Her laugh was really adorable. He hadn't heard an honest laugh in a long time. She was full of enery and life, the opposite of him. He was sure if someone saw them from a distance, they would see a dark cloud over his head and a sun, shining bright over hers.
-Yes.-he smiled. She was really excited to be in Hogwarts. Could she be...No, she's too smart and clever-looking, she can't be, could she..?
-My parents were shocked when they learned that I'm a witch!-she giggled. Well, that was the answer he hoped wasn't true. She was muggle-born. A mudblood. The people his family most hated.
-Y-your parents aren't wizards?-he asked nerviously, hoping she meant something else before.
-No. They're dentists.
-Dentists?
-They fix um...People's teeth..
-Oh...-she laughed at his confusion. That adorable laugh. No, he shouldn't even think that. He should leave now. He must hate her. She doesn't have the right to speak to him.
-You're a mudblood, then.-he blurred out, without wanting to. The words just came out, his mind made him say it. He had to.
-I...-she looked hurt. He felt guilty for saying it, but he knew better than to apologise.
A boy opened the door to their compartment and looked around.
-Excuse m-me, have you seen a frog? I lost mine...
-I will help you!-Hermione quickly stood up.-I have nothing to do here, anyway.-she gave Draco a death stare and left.
He felt guilty the whole train ride to the school. He didn't even pay attention to the two boys who greeted him and started following him around. He felt guilty when they got off the train and looked around, trying to find Hermione, to get over his stupid pride and apologise. He felt guilty when they entered the Great Hall. He felt guilty when he saw her climb up those stairs and sit on the chair.
-Gryffindor!-the Sorting Hat yelled. Hermione seemed really happy and headed straight to the Gryffindor table, greeted with cheers. He knew he had lost her now.
But he could get into Gryffindor if he wanted to...But what would his father say? He would let his family down. No, he must go to Slytherin. There is no other way. When he approached the Sorting Hat he started thinking of every horrible thing his father ever told him. The thoughts rushing through his head weren't his own, they were his father's words, his approach and view on mudbloods, on Gryffindor.
The hat didn't even touch his head when it screamed "Slytherin!". He faked a smile and walked over to the Slytherin table. He looked over at Hermione for one last time with his own, pure, innocent eyes. The next time he would lay his eyes on her, it would be with brand new eyes, with his father's eyes. With the eyes and Malfoy should have.
.(Don't you ever say I just walked away, I will always want you)
