Daron had been running back to camp, he had realised the threat his men could be under.
Dashing through the foliage Daron's heart was pounding. He had good men at that camp, he couldn't dare lose what he had...
After some time Daron finally reached the camp. He heard people. He could not have been happier about that.
Walking into the camp were many bodies, both of his men and the attackers. Trying to clean up the mess were about seven men. Seven had survived out of fifteen. One man wasn't accounted for.
Daron counted about six of the enemy; so few of them killing so many of his. Daron couldn't be having this.
He knew his men had to be better trained. Sure he had just recruited them that week but they had to be prepared for anything.
One of the soldiers noticed Daron and alerted the others. They were rejoiced to see him.
"Sir! We're glad you're back. We were attacked." That was Palim, he was a guardsman in his old town, he had a basic grasp of military discipline.
"Yeah, I can see that." Daron replied, "how are they?"
"Well, you can see for yourself." Palim didn't appreciate Daron's questioning of the obvious.
Daron ordered the men who were unharmed to aid the wounded first, to then loot from the enemies' dead and finally to bury their dead.
Another soldier reported in. "There were more of them, they left as the battle was finishing. We were more focused on sorting out wounded out." The soldier's tone was very apologetic.
"There's no need to be so apologetic, you did the completely right thing."
The soldier looked nervous. "Oh, well actually... One of the men; Fari went off after the rest of them, are we going to go after him?"
Daron's stomach hardened a fair bit. He had to make a decision he didn't want to make, Fari was a good man, albeit quite emotionally charged. They had to be logical, however.
"No, he left fully knowing what he was doing. He can deal with his decision. Hopefully he'll be fine." Daron explained. He knew some of the men would disapprove, but really their priorities were the tasks at hand, thinking about which he too had to get on with them.
Daron began to help with cleaning the camp; he gathered and organised the dead as others helped make sure the wounded could be mobile as soon as possible. Luckily only 3 of the seven were injured at all, and only one seriously.
Once the injured soldiers had been dealt with half of them looted the enemies as the other half cremated their dead.
Night was falling as the camp had finished everything they had to do. Stricter patrols had been called for that night as they took a rotation.
They made sure to rest that night. they could address what's next for them in the morning.
