As we pull into tommy's drive he starts to look nervous.
"What's wrong?" I sign to him.
" I should have told you earlier but I felt kind of worried, so I'll tell you now. But my dad left my mum and I when I was 6. My mum hasn't gotten over it so... Just sorry if she says anything ... Irrational." He says to me.
"I'd rather be here with you than at home with..." I shudder as goosebumps appear on my skin "Victor. My stepdad." I sign back.
He sees I'm uncomfortable talking about it so he drops the subject.
We walk inside.
There is broken glass and smashed pottery all over the place as we enter.
"THOMAS! HAVE YOU ANY IDEA WHAT TIME IT IS?!?" I figured that was his mother.
"Ma! school started today! I'm home on time!" I brought a friend home today! please be nice" he pleads rolling his eyes.
"A WHAT!?!" What I'm pretty sure is his mother, strides out of, what I assume is the kitchen, holding a bottle of vodka. It clicked. She was a drunk. THATS what tommy was warning me about. Tommy slipped me an apologetic look.
" YOU BRING HOME SOME SLUT FROM SCHOOL WHEN YOU KNOW DAMN WELL IM F***ING SICK!?! YOU TELL THAT WHORE TO GO HOME RIGHT NOW THOMAS! BEFORE I SMASH THIS BOTTLE OVER YOUR F***ING HEAD!" She roared. I was taken aback. I opened and closed my mouth before realising I couldn't say anything to defend myself.
"WHAT?!? CANT DEFEND YOURSELF!? IM RIGHT AREN'T I ? ARENT I?" She laughed manically. Then lowered her tone.
"Bitch.. go home." She turned around and staggered away.
Shakily and a bit scared tommy turned to me and whispered. "Let's go up to my room." Then he signed. "She won't be able to go up the stairs in this state. You will be safe"
When we got into his room Tom couldn't stop apologising "I'm so sorry! I'm so sorry! Is there anything I can do to make up for it?" Tommy kept replaying pacing his room.
I tapped him on his back. When he turned around I signed. "Thomas. Stop"
Then I kissed him.
When we broke apart he sighed.
"You probably won't want to come here again." I slapped him and kissed him once more. in between breaks he mumbled.
"Neverrr miiiind then...."
