I rushed across the agency to get to the growing crowd of people swarming the prime minister. Every single one of us there were here to report deaths. The main town of our country, Skystead, has fallen victim to the serial killer that's been around for a few years.
All of us surrounding the prime minister, including myself, were yelling about the deaths. "Two in Northpass!"
"Seven in Halivaara!" "Three in Strathford!" "Family of twelve in Taewe!"
I was assigned the case of twelve. I have absolutely no clue why though, considering I've never been on a case larger than two with a few partners. As per usual, all the kills were the exact same. We have absolutely no clue why, at least the rookies don't, but something gives me a burning suspicion that the higher-ups know about it...
Besides that, all of the rookies that got even semi-close to figuring out the case were found dead and were killed the same way, gun shot to the head. But if it were a gun, wouldn't anyone hear it..? Sadly, the citizens have yet to report hearing a gunshot in the middle of the night.
Sighing and rubbing my forehead, I wait for my coffee to brew. "What's up with the stressed face, man?" A coworker that I was actually kind of friends with asked. I shook my head to get my thoughts in place. "I was assigned the Jensen's case. But everyone that's gotten close to figuring out the case has been killed, but if I don't figure out the case I could be fired.." I lean against the counter and scrunch up to be as small as possible.
"Well good luck with that, May." They said, walking off with their energy drink. I glared at her and angrily took my coffee from the brewing machine. Come to think of it.. She had the Connolly's case, didn't she..? I huffed and sipped my coffee, yelping as I burned my tongue. She'll probably end up getting killed..
I snatch up my papers and head to my crammed office, glaring at the locked door of research center for the higher-ups. No one was allowed in it for whatever reason, but today I plan to sneak in on my lunch break. All I needed to do was steal the keys from Jack's office, and he always forgets to lock his door.
Walking into my own office, I glare at the mess. My 'office buddy' wasn't exact fat, but she ate all the time. I kicked a Mountain Dew can across the room. She shrieked and jumped after the rolling can. I scoff and slump down on my chair. "You're a twenty three year old woman, you don't need to be acting like soda cans are your babies."
She looks at me from the ground and grinned. "I don't see you having any better mental health than me." She remarked, getting up and petting the can. She walked back to her desk, tossed the can in the trash, and said, "What's your damage, man." She asked, tossing me a cold Dr. Pepper.
I rolled my eyes and catch the soda, opening and chugging it. "I'm headed to the research center on my lunch break." Her eyes widened. "Really? They're finally letting the rookies into the center?!" She hopped up and did a happy dance. I stare at her, sipping my coffee.
"Nope."
She looks at me confused. "Then how are you..?" Then it dawned on her. "May, you cannot be serious.. You'll get fired if you're caught!"
I sigh. "Yeah no shit sherlock, that's why I'm not gonna get caught. Even if I did, I was assigned the Jensen's case. I'm too much of a precious item for them to fire." I smack the case files on my desk next to my keyboard and open it up. My eyes widen and my mouth opens in shock.
"Bu- what?! There's only two papers on the whole case!" I shout, jumping up. "Are they back sided..?" She ask. I glare at her and quickly read through all of the paper. I gave a desperate look to no one after I finished reading and smacked my head against the desk. "This is the most unhelpful case file ever!"
She walked over and read through it. "I mean, at least you have the profiles of every family member and where they died.." I glare at her. "ThEy DiEd In ThE sAmE eXaCt PlAcE." I shouted.
With a furious face, I get up and slam my hands against my desk. "That's it, Jack is on his lunch break right?" I glare/glance at the clock and start walking to the door. "May.. Don't do this. You're gonna get caught and then FIRED!" She says as I stomp out of our office door. "MAY!"
I snuck up to Jack's office door. I open the door carefully, turn around, and almost shut it. I very carefully open one of his desk drawers and get the key to the research center out. Hearing footsteps come up to the room, I panic and hide behind the desk. "Huh.. I thought I closed my door..?" I hear. Then the creaking of the door, then the door locking.
I sigh quietly and get out from underneath the desk, walking to the door. I peak out to make sure he's gone and run out, closing the door behind me. My office buddy comes up and grabs my arm, dragging me away. "What in the hell are you doing May?! You're going to get us fired!" She whisper yells.
I glare at her. "I already told you what I'm doing, and you won't get fired if you leave me be." I say, snatching my arm away from her grip. After an intense stare down, she sighs and rubs her forehead in annoyance. "Fine. But if I see another message from you saying something about how you can't find a job, I'm coming over to your house and personally beating the shit out of you."
