No one's POV

The telephone's rings broke the silence. The caller ID made her heart rise to her throat. She grasped the receiver and said a breathless 'hello'. Just by looking at the caller ID, she knew something was wrong.

"Hey."

Her heartbeat fastened just by the sound of his voice. What could he possibly want from her now? She hadn't seen him in quite a while.

"What's wrong?" Like echoes through a cavern, her voice reverberated through the line. 
He let out a deep sigh and told her "I need you to take care of him."

She crumpled into a chair, clutched her chest to calm the heartbeat that felt as if it would break her ribs.

"Do you hear me? I need you to take care of him and his son."

Tears filled her eyes; tears of anxiety and despair.

"Why? Why now? I thought everything was over? I thought we were done." She tried to get her thoughts together.

"There's no time for me to explain it to you, I just have to know you will do what I asked you."

She heard an intake of breath and then whispered, "I don't know if I can do this."

"He trusts you," he said, his voice as reassuring as the first morning coffee.

The weighted silence ran through the wire. The only thing you could hear were her sobs and rapid footsteps in the background.

She listened a second more before a faint, unfamiliar whisper,"it's done," left her mouth.

She heard a beep from the other side of the phone, signaling the end of the conversation; the end of what had once seemed to be only the beginning of her new life...
