A long time ago, magic was founded. It quickly became a field in which everyone wished to be in. A school was planned to be made in which people could go to learn this art. In order to split up the students, the Academy was divided into four elemental groups, based on the type of magic they studied. Each one was represented by a certain animal. The hawk for the air, the stallion for the fire, the lion for the earth, and the wolf for the water. As the years went by, the school became more and more crowded, before the leaders made the decision to only accept certain scholars.

"Melody!" My mom shouted. "Time for dinner!" I folded the page of my history book down and closed it. "Coming!" I yelled back. I ran down the stairs to see my mom preparing me a plate. "I can make my own food! I'm almost thirteen." I complained. She sighed.

"I'm sorry, I just always forget how old you're getting." She brushed a strand of my brown hair out of my face. "Oh, and by the way, you got a letter today. I set it on your bed." I nodded as I finished making my plate. I ate, fairly quickly, devouring my nearly tasteless food.

On our planet, Zarr, natural resources have been pretty low, while pollution is pretty high. On other planets it's better, but they refuse to share. You have to be pretty rich to get good food. And my family is not. Heck, dad's still at work trying to get us better living conditions.

"Goodnight mom." I say, heading back upstairs. "Going to bed already?" She asks, not looking up from the news. "Yeah." "Well, goodnight honey. Sleep well." I grab my book of the ground where I had left it. I sat on my bed and started on the next chapter.

As the Academy progressed farther and farther, it became apparent that a council needed to take control. But how would representitives be chosen without a war being declared? So a solution was formed. Every student would have the privilege to challenge other students to a duel. The winner of the duel would gain points for the victory. The person with the most points would be the representative. As result, the Academy also became a combat school. This method seemed to work out well and the school's issues were resolved once more.

I yawned as I marked my page and put the book on my night stand. Darn homework. I laid down, eyes almost shut. I was halfway asleep when I realized I was laying on a piece of paper. I sat up to find I had laid down on the letter my mom had told me about. Oops. I opened it up neatly, to find a letter written in a golden color of ink.

 Dear Melody Merrion,

You have been chosen to attend the Academy.

I don't know what else it said. Probably because I was too busy screaming my head off.

Hey guys! Frosty here. So how was that? I've had this idea for a while, and I don't have any stories on this profile so... HERE. Sorry the first chapter was so short. I will have a cover later, but am not able to at the moment. Oh, and about Melody's last name, heh. I HAD NO OTHER IDEAS I'M SORRY. (Inside thing) Anyways, this book is entirely mine. Okay, I got the duel idea from The Asterisk War. THATS ALL. So,
