"I can't believe Monroe has me out doing something as ridiculous as picking up groceries. It's the job of someone lower on the totem pole, not me!" She complains, babbling on about the petty task at hand.
She pulls out a list of things that he needed. They were nothing out of the ordinary. Toothpaste, milk, eggs, butter. Peony could shoot better than any of his men, yet here she was, wasting her talent on buying toothpaste.
Peony jumps at the slightest touch on her shoulder. "Ack!"
She spins on her heel, gun pointed and ready to shoot at whoever was behind her.
"Don't move-" She begins, giving her macho spill, when she realizes who she was pointing the gun at.
He sighs, swatting the gun away.
'Hello, to you, too,' Nicolas signs.
A breath of relief escapes her chest. She holsters her gun and picks up the shopping list that had fallen to the ground sometime during her little spook.
'Sorry about that. I've not dealt with many friendly faces these past few days,' she signs.
Peony was able to sign just as well as Nic could. She picked it up a few years back when she had went to college to pursue a career in education. Even went as far as to learn sign language because she felt that it would benefit her teaching in case she had a student who couldn't hear, like Nic. Her goal died down once she realized that she didn't like children and that somehow, she felt some attachment to this rotting hole called Ergastulum.
He looks down at the list in her hands. 'You busy?'
'Not really,' she replies.
He motions with his hand for her to follow. Though completing her task at hand would be the more responsible decision; Peony wasn't much of a responsible person. She followed closely behind Nic.
They duck into an alleyway filled with trash and dried bloods stains that have yet to be washed away.
Nic shuffles through a pocket on the inside of his sleek, black jacket until he finds a crisp, white envelope. The paper hisses as Peony breaks the seal and pulls a letter out from inside. Theo's signature at the bottom confirmed where the envelope had come from.
Peony skins over it, not bothering to read all of the details written in pristine handwriting.
"What?!" Peony puffs and rolls her eyes. "There's no way."
Nic lifts an eyebrow as he rests his back against the wall.
'He wants me to play music Friday night,' Peony signs. 'For Nina's birthday.'
'You must be good, then,' Nico jests.
"There's not enough time to prepare a song and it's completely last minute," Peony says to the sky. "I should've just went grocery shopping."
Nicolas nudges her should with his hand. 'Look, I don't know much about singing, but it's really important that you show up. Nina loves to hear you sing. Make her happy.'
Her hands rummaged through her blonde hair. 'Why's this gotta be tough? It's going to take some time, but,' Peony groans. 'I want to see her happy, so I'll do it.'
'Good,' Nico pats, Peony on her head, harder than she would have cared for. 'See you Friday.'
