I huffed furiously going to pay my parents bills. If my father wanted to be childish and lock up the checks and cash my sister and I bring to the house because he's too prideful to use the money fine, but I'll be damned if he causes my mother to be in the dark or out of water because he doesn't want to take our help.
Hearing my mother call me and tell me something as foolish as that made me almost lose my entire mind.
"Mommy."
"Yes baby?" she asked.
"I took care of it Ma." I told her.
"Thank you baby." She sighed.
"You okay? I'm coming to pick you up in an hour. I want to go to lunch." I said not even feeling hungry.
"Okay. I'll see if your father wants to come."
I rolled my eyes. "Alright mommy." I said and we hung up.
Things like this made me upset. I couldn't help but cry. All I wanted to do was help, and my father pushed us farther and farther away from being able to help them.
I sighed calming down I checked my cell phone. I looked at the pictures my sister sent me. I smiled watching her, Dre and Jayden have a good time.
"Hello." I said.
"Hey Somber Sally!" My sister said.
I sighed. "So not the time for jokes."
"What happened?" She asked.
"Daddy decided to keep all the checks and money locked up in a box so mommy couldn't get to it. He says he's giving it all back to us."
"Are you serious?" She asked sucking her teeth.
I sighed. "Yup. I had to go pay the water, gas and electric bills. I ended up paying all the past due amounts. By the end of the week I'll finish paying it. I know they gonna be calling me today."
"God damn." She huffed.
"I know." I said knowing exactly how she was feeling.
We gave enough money for it to look as if we all chip into bills. Although I make enough money doing what I do to pay the bills off for months, I don't want to be flashy or raise any eyebrows. My father's foolishness puts us in a messed up position.
"Listen, don't worry okay?" She told me.
"I'm not gonna. Listen, I'll call you back okay?" I asked her.
Once I hung up with her, I dried my eyes and drove to my parents house.
Once I got to the house I decided to go in. My father stood outside waiting for me.
"You mad at me princess?" He asked wrapping his arms around me.
"Daddy, no. Of course not." I sighed. "I just wish you wouldn't do that."
"I thought I could handle it myself and I just-"
"You don't have to worry." I told him.
I know things are hard especially after the kidney transplant with mommy getting fired.
"You know I blame myself for that." He said.
From when my father was in the war, he developed kidney problems that got so severe that one completely shut down. My mother matched with him, and gave him on of her own. During her recovery in the hospital, her job fired her.
The insurance ran out and now it's out of pocket paying for medical bills and insurance.
"Daddy no. It's not your fault." I sighed. "Let's just go eat." I said.
