Running. Sounds good when you think about it, doesn't it? But I'm scared. What could be the consequences? Physical or mental pain? Suicide or murder? Who knows? The sounds of my sister screaming and crying come from the basement. I almost cry at the sound of it. Ever since my mother died, our stepfather has been abusive because he thought we were the reason she died. She was sick before they got married. I hear the basement door open and sit up straight. He man handled my sister and push her into the room.
"You do your homework?" He asks me sternly. I nodded then swallow my spit hard. He leaves the room and slams the door. I quickly walk over to my sister and hug her, making her feel safe. We go to bed and wait for the next day.***
My eyes open slowly as I hear the water run in the bathroom. He must not be here. Hyorin never gets out of bed when he's here. I get out of bed, do what I need to do then change into my school uniform. I hated uniformed schools. They had no freedom. Hyorin and I walk out the house, ready for school. I make sure Hyorin gets to her class and then I make my way to mine. My friend, Maiya, runs over to me.
"Hey guess what?" She asks me. I raise my eyebrow and give her the same sour expression I give everybody.
"What?" I says as I fold my arms.
"My mom and I are moving to Seoul, South Korea and we extra plane tickets left! So, here are some for you, Hyorin, and your stepfather." She says as she hands me the plane tickets. I give her back the third one and she looks at me with a confused look.
"I have an idea. Hyorin and I going to run. Away for everything. I'm almost finished High School. Hyorin can live with you and your mother and I could live by myself. Wait, I need money..." I trail out, thinking deeply about this plan.
"I'll text you the rest when I get home. What day are you guys-"
"You really think this is a good idea? Hyorin is going to miss you. Plus, what are you going to do for employment? We could give you enough money for rent, groceries, and bills for a year but after that you're on your own." Maiya tells me. I hug her tight and thank her. We walk into class and the day goes by in the snap of a finger. Hyorin is outside my classroom door waiting for me. We were all dismissed and I walk to her. I tell her about the Running Away plan and she loved it. She didn't mind that she would live with Maiya and her mom. We get home and find our stepfather in the kitchen. We greet him so we don't get hit. We go to our room and I text Maiya.Haneul: I told Hyorin the plan and she accepted it. So what day are you guys leaving?
Maiya: Tomorrow. Get everything ready 2nite. Is your stepfather there?
Haneul: Yes but not for long. He's going out.
Maiya: Good. So I can come over?
Haneul: Sure just don't leave any evidence
Maiya: Kk cya in a bit
Haneul: Okay bye
I put my phone under my pillow and our stepfather walks in.
"I'm going out. If anybody is over or you guys sneak out. I will find you and you will get hurt. Badly. Understood?" He tells us. We nod and he leaves. As soon as I hear the front door close, I hear a knock on my window. It was Maiya. I open it and let her in. She helps us gather everything together and hide it. She asked if we had passports and I nodded. We all took at trip to Germany with our mom before she died one year. We gave them to her as she left.
"Thank you so much. I owe you everything." I tell her hugging her. She leaves and I close the window. We go to sleep, anxious for tomorrow.
