Blood stained my fingers. My face. My body. The little girl was there again, standing there, watching me with a cold smile that never reached her eyes. Her eyes are what scare me most. Red with black scrawls of lines; long pretty lashes brushing her cheek as she blinked. They were always emotionless, stony. That was the coldest thing about her. Giant black angels’ wings adorned her back the tips just brushing the ground, they seemed far too big for her small self. Her black hair was left hanging by her waist this time, instead of clipped up into a bun, black bangs with a red streak through the middle reached just under her eyebrows. Her hands were clasped behind her back as she tilted her head at me, her hair falling effortlessly over her shoulder. She took a step toward me. I tried to turn around and run but I slipped on my own blood. I couldn’t scream. Instead of being gagged, this time, my lips were sewn shut. She laughed as I struggled to stand and took another step to me. I looked around frantically. Everything was black and red. Blood. It was all blood. I was blinded by it. She took another step to me. I hung my head in defeat, glaring at her through my hair. Her eyes glittered dangerously and she pulled one of her hands from behind her back. Her nails were painted white, manicured to a sharp point. She reached towards me and slowly dragged her finger over my chest leaving a line of blood in its trail. My breathing was shallow and as my chest rose with gasps for air her finger dug in. Her smile widened and she slowly began digging all five of her fingers into my chest. She pierced the first layer of skin and twisted in a slow circle. I screamed and thrashed, trying to claw her hand away in vain. She laughed and dug even deeper.
I woke covered in sweat, my breathing erratic and loud. I must have screamed in my sleep again because the dogs next door were barking. I threw off the covers and whipped around my room, looking for my phone. I dully remembered leaving it with my Aunt. I crept to her door and knocked. No reply. I pushed open the door and found it sitting on her bed. She hasn’t been back yet… I won’t worry again. She usually goes for midnight runs. I walked back to my room and flipped off the lamp. I flinched at the sudden bright light as I turned on my phone. I dialled “Sore Bum x”
He picked up on the fifth ring.
“Rebecca?” I could hear him wiping sleep from his eyes, running his hand through his hair.
“Sorin…” I whispered into the phone. His voice was my solace.
“Another one, huh?” His dazed voice dripped with concern.
“The same girl.”
“Lay down then, Lee.” I heard him settle back into bed.
“Before you sing me to sleep, what’s the time?” It was quiet for 5 seconds as he checked his time.
“Its 4:35.” I pulled my covers up to my chin.
“Okay.” I whispered, waiting for his soft voice to come back. He sang one of my favourite songs.
When we were younger Sorin used to sing me to sleep every night. I wouldn’t be able to sleep without it. I’ve had these strange nightmares all my life, the same girl glowering at me then slowly killing me. I would wake up screaming then jump out of my window to see him when he used to live next door to me. He suggested a therapist once but quickly dismissed it at the face I made. I hated therapy. What’s the point in digging up all that pain? I know I’ll just be dwelling on my problems and it’ll start to eat at me. Besides, I had Sorin. He always protected me when somebody picked on me and I always ran to him when I got scared. When I was told my mother died in India Sorin held me all night as I cried and cried. She was a travel agent so I didn’t see much of her but she was still my mummy and the sweet, precious memories I had of her picked at my emotional wounds. I was 7 when it happened. I wasn’t put into a foster home or adoption centre; I had always lived with my aunty for as long as I could remember. Listening to his angelic, deep, voice hum softly I drifted off to sleep.
