Prologue

A soft wind swished through the sighing branches of the over head  willow tree ruffling Willow's fur. Willow nestled in to her mothers soft side taking in the scent of her: pine trees and cinnamon.
They were laying under the Willow of Prophecy (the willow tree) on the top of Firefly Hill. It was night time in the spring and willow's favorite day. Howling Day! A day where every wolf in willow's tribe would Howl at the full moon. But this is no ordinary howl... It is an act of celebrating the day that the seven tribes of the Northern wolf territory of Avaelia (Uh- vay- lee- uh) joined together in harmony to create the biggest tribe in all of Avaelia: The Fog Mountain tribe.
Willow was just about to close her eyes when she heard it. The first howl of the night. Then another. And another. More and more wolves kept joining in until the night was filled with the sound.
Willow's mother joined in beside her. A song compared to the other sounds.
Willow was too mesmerized by the other howling that she forgot to howl herself. She slid in closer to her mom.
But when Willow was just about to let out her own howl she herd something. Something different. Like a scream and a howl combined. Whatever the sound was it was scary. And getting closer.
Willow's mother heard  the noise and insisted that the two of them make their way back home. Quickly.

By the time Willow and her mother had reached the Spirit River Trail the beast was maybe a mile behind.
Another howl sounded and Willow's mother shoved willow's 6 month old body into a nearby bush instructing her to keep quiet.
The beast got closer. So close that Willow could fully smell the animal. Like rotting flesh and wet moss and something else that Willow didn't want to find out.

"Willow,"whispered Willow's mother," no matter what happens to me... You run. You run all the way home. Find our pack and wait with them for me to come home."

Willow couldn't believe what she was hearing,"No!"she yelped," Wha-what about you? Let me stay! I! I want to help, I--" Willow was interrupted by the sound of Heavy paws on the near by ground.

     "Run!" Exclaimed Willow's mom,"Go, now!"

Willow's mother's head shot up. The beast had arrived. Large. Like a bear but... Different. It seemed stronger and almost canine.
Willow only got one more look into her mother's soft brown eyes before her mother ran in the opposite direction. The beast close on her tail.
Willow let out a small cry before bolting away herself.
She had never ran as fast in her life! Willow was so close to home that she could smell other wolves from her tribe on the wind. She could see the faint glow of fire light in the distance.
But when she was sure that she was safe she heard the worst sound she had ever herd in her entire life. Though it was far away she could still make out
the scream of her mother.
Overwhelmed by the terror she felt, Willow tripped over a tree root. All the air was sucked out her lungs and Willow's body crashed to the ground with a thud, and she blacked out.

🐾🐾🐾

When Willow woke up she was in the pitch black Forest. Alone. Orphaned by the beast, her only option was to sit lost in the woods until morning, when she walk the rest of the distance home.
