"The Story of Cain," the title read. I picked up the new book and flipped to the front page, fingering the soft leather cover with my thumb.

"Once, long ago, there was a man named Cain. Cain was married to a beautiful young woman named Rose, and they were expecting a child together. This was not an ordinary family. As it happens, Cain had been bitten by a terrible creature not long after his child was concieved. This creature, a vampire, made Cain immortal. His wife, Rose, did not mind this at all. In fact, she tried again and again to convince Cain to bite her, too. Cain refused. He would not put his lovely Rose through what he underwent to become the way he was.
Rose and Cain spent almost nine happy months together, awaiting their first child, when Cain met Michael. Michael was not what Cain was; a monster. A vampire. Cain trusted Michael with his secret, and Michael kept it, gaining more and more trust from the family.
One day, Cain found out that Michael loved his own Rose. Cain grew furious with Michael. Without much thought, he harshly scolded Michael, and left to let his temper run down. Michael let himself into Cain's home and walked in on Rose sleeping in her bedroom. Michael grew jealous of Cain, and a rage flamed inside him. If he could not have Rose, Cain could not either. He found a knife from the kitchen and carefully cut out her heart, sobbing. He had killed Rose and the child inside her."

I gasped, the story was so sad. That poor child never got a chance to live, I thought, but at least the story isn't real. The rain coming down outside made it hard to concentrate, but I couldn't help but read on.

"When Cain arrived home, he saw his dead wife and cried for days. His life was ruined in a matter of minutes. He would never have another love, and he vowed to catch whoever did the horrible crime. But he already knew; Michael. He searched through many villages, taking down whatever stood in his way. Cain killed many who tried to stop him, and burned empty buildings, trying to satisfy the anger inside him. Nothing worked, he continued to search for Michael and found that Michael had been turned to a vampire long after he left the town where Cain stayed.
Over four hundred years later, Cain was still searching for Michael. He came across a town that knew of Michael. They told Cain where to find him, although they were weary of the traveler. Cain observed Michael and his new family. Michael had forgotten or seemed to have forgotten everything he had done. He sat happily with his wife, who was not a vampire and who looked to be at least six months expecting. There was another child, who must have been their other child, running around laughing. Cain's entire being told him he shouldn't be there, but he couldn't resist. He ran as fast as he could to get back to his old town. He knew of warlocks that would help him with his plan of revenge on Michael.
It took Cain three months to get back to his village, he knew he had to work fast or his plan would fall through like sand between fingers.
Cain approached the warlocks he knew best and proposed an idea. They all knew what Michael had done, so they agreed. The agreement was simple: Michael's wife would give birth to Cain's unborn child, instead of their own. Cain knew Rose was about to have a girl, so he also knew she'd look almost identical to Rose. Michael would never have the chance to forget what he'd done as the child grew older."

The story kept getting more ludicrous! Warlocks, vampires? Who would even write about that. I flipped back to the cover, but there was no author. I could see why someone wouldn't want credit for this.

"After a few days, Cain had realized what he'd done. As soon as Michael saw the child's face, he would get frightened and kill it, thinking it was some sort of reincarnation of Rose. He'd put his own daughter in danger. Cain ran to the warlocks again, pleading them to take back the spell. They couldn't do it. The child was already born. Cain couldn't believe it, it was too unreal. He'd lost his wife to Michael, he couldn't lose his child the same way. He asked the warlocks if there was anything he could do to protect her; they had another way. One of the warlocks told Cain the only other way was to place another spell on her.
