Preparation for hella the talent show was one of the hardest things I've done. The show itself was in two weeks so it gave me a perfect amount of time to choose what to sing. Deep down, I knew that I wanted to sing but it was just hard to admit to myself.

Every night my mother would sing Harmony and me to sleep. She would sing a couple of different songs but she always end by singing "When You Wish Upon a Star. "from Pinocchio. She told us that the song wasn't actually about wishing on an actual star but it was about embrace and hope. If you work hard something and continue to work at it then you would reach your goal. She thought that the message was beautifully sung in the song. So I decided to sing the song.

I almost backed out 15 times a day. My grandmother was the biggest help in the preparation process.

"Come Mel, I have something to give you. " My grandmother said a day before the show.

I followed her to her room. She led me to her jeweled box where she kept her jewelry. She pulled out a beautiful silver necklace with a sapphire shaped like a music note.

"It was your mother's. Your grandfather and I got it for her for her high school graduation. She put it on whenever she would have to perform. She called it her lucky charm. But when you were born she decided that she didn't need the necklace anymore because you are lucky charm. She planned on giving it to you for your high school graduation but I think now would better time to give it to you. " Grandma said.

She clasped the necklace around my neck and I suddenly felt at peace. It was like having my mother with me again.

"Thank you, this is just what I needed." I hugged her tight.

The next day I woke up wanting to throw up. I almost talked myself into locking myself in my room but after putting on my mom's necklace I felt better.

"You can do this. You can do this. " I chanted to myself on the ride there. " Mom is going to be so proud. "

"You will be fine Melody, I'm so proud to call you my sister. " Harmony hugged me before I headed over to the backstage area.

Tucker told me he wanted to save my performance for last. He even thanked me for trying out as if I had a choice whether or not I had wanted to try out. The bad thing about going last was the wait. I just wanted to get it over with so that I could get on with my life.

"Now please welcome our last act of the night, the very talented Melody. " I head Tucker yell into the mike.

I slowly made my way to the stage. I allowed my mother's voice to overlap the sound of the crowd. I heard her humming the opening. Then she started and so did I.

"When you wish upon a star

Makes no difference who you are

Anything your heart desires

Will come to you..."

I saw her smile. She always made sure to show her emotions when she sang.

"If your heart is in your dream

No request is too extreme

When you wish upon a star

Like dreamers do..."

Harmony would have already been asleep at this point of the song but not me. I wanted to wait until the end of the song before I could fall asleep.

"Fate is kind

She brings to those who love

The sweet fulfillment of

Their secret longing..."

By this point she pulled Harmony and me close to her and kiss us both on the forehead.

"Like a bolt out of the blue

Fate steps in and pulls you through

When you wish upon a star

Your dream comes true..."

She set us back on our beds. I kept my eyes on her the whole time. She was mesmorizing when she sang.

"Like a bolt out of the blue

Fate steps in and pulls you through

When you wish upon a star

Your dream comes true. "

I didn't hear the applause. I heard my mother say good night.

The first person that came up to me when I walked off of the stage was Harmony. She didn't say anything but tears were streaming down her face. I hadn't told her my song choice. I wanted it to be a surprise.

"Mel that was amazing. " Sophie said running up to me.

I couldn't speak for a moment but I hugged her. It blew me away that I could sing that song without my mother physically being with me. But maybe she didn't have to physically be with me for me to be okay. All I truly needed was her spirit with me. I clutched my necklace tightly.
