"Let me go," I said. "Please."
The man laughed and said, "Why the hell should I do that?"
"Do you want everyone here to die?" I asked.
"Are you threatening me, Ms. Than?" he asked, leaning in closer.
"Ok, so who do you want to die first? I'm open for suggestions. Oh, what about Mr. Garner? He seems nice-"
"Ms. Than, what is that you want to do?" he asked. "I certainly know for a fact that you do not want to kill anybody."
"And how do you know that?" I asked.
"You would've done so already," he said, standing up. "I've been in this line of work for over fifty years, so I know what a cold-blood killer looks like. You, Ms., are no killer."
"I've killed a lot of people," I said.
"That may be, Ms. Than, but you don't enjoy it," he said, putting a hand on my shoulder. "Isn't that right?"
"Just let me go," I said, looking straight ahead.
"You want to go to San Francisco, right?" he asked. "What's there?"
"A friend," I replied. "He or she is like me."
"Like you?"
I nodded. "But this one can't kill," I said. "So you don't have to worry."
"Well, unfortunately, Ms. Than, we have a bit of a pickle," he said. "We've already contacted the government. So you see, we can't let you go."
"Then why did you come in here to negotiate with me?" I asked, confused.
"I wanted to meet you," he said. "It's not every day I meet someone like you, Ms. Than. Usually your kind is kept locked up. For a good reason, too."
"What do you mean my kind?" I asked. "All the Heirs?"
"No, just you," he said. "The Heir of Death, I think is what you're called."
"Why just me?" I asked.
He laughed. "You don't know?"
"Know... what?" I asked hesitantly.
He chuckled once more and said, "Well, looks like your father hasn't told you anything, has you?"
"Not really," I said. "I just found out yesterday what I was."
"Well then, Ms. Than, the reason your kind is locked up-"
"Because I can kill people, yeah, I know."
"No, it's much more than that," he said, leaning in closer to my ear. "The Heirs are practically immortal and unstoppable. The only thing that can kill them is you. So you see, we can't let you go find the others, Ms. Than. It would be... problematic if something unfortunate was to happen to them."
"What's problematic, sir, is that I have very little patience when I don't get what I want..." I threatened calmly. I took a deep breath and tried not to let it consume me.
"I think that's all I have time for today, Ms. Than," he said, patting my shoulder. "Goodbye."
He waltzed out the door, bringing the smug grin with him.
I cursed under my breath, yanking up on the handcuffs only to slam them back down into the table. "Ow..."
I wasn't any closer to finding the next Heir.
