Chapter One
I was sitting in our patio, glaring at the soaring birds. Laci was swimming, her body distorted by the water. Honey was sun tanning; she was lying on a patio chair on the other side of the pool. She had fallen asleep with her sun glasses on, I didn’t dare wake her. Laci came up for air and turned to look in my direction. She gave me a curious look and disappeared again.
It had been two weeks since we left Europe. We still haven’t broken the news to our parents. I don’t know how you would tell your parents you secretly got married because the world depended on it. I could imagine Mom getting a heart attack and Dad disowning us. The whole situation was getting on my last nerves.
I haven’t heard from Theodore, or any of them for that matter. Keep in touch? Guess not. I felt different after leaving. It felt as if I was leaving something important and I wasn’t coming back for it; a piece of me gone forever. I missed Theodore and the thought of leaving him made my insides churn and my heart throb. Did he miss me? No calls, no texts, no emails, not even a letter.
“Hey, Cris, have you noticed something?” Laci was now standing on the edge of the pool, water dripping down her body.
“Mom and Dad are going to disown us?” I offered. She rolled her eyes and pouted her lips.
“No,” she paused, “I am swimming.”
“I don’t get it.” I gave her a confused look and began to ignore her. I didn’t have the time for riddles.
“It’s just I haven’t gotten...” she dragged on the ‘n’. I glared at her; I wasn’t in the mood for her right now.
“Haven’t gotten what sweetheart?” Mom walked over to us with a pitcher full of lemonade. I took a glass and chugged it down. Wait, I missed it, what was she talking about?
“Chad’s birthday is in a couple of days and we haven’t gotten him anything. We have no money.” she gave Mom a small smile.
“Take my card, it’s in my purse. Go crazy.” she smiled and walked over to wake Honey. I gave Laci a confused look and walked away. I needed a shower. I walked into the kitchen and saw Dad talking on the phone. He was arguing with someone then he hung up.
“Who was that?” I asked him while I rummaged through the fridge. He was startled and then he smiled at me.
“Hey pumpkin, that was just,” he looked away, “That was Jake, from State Farm.” we laughed and I grabbed a coke. I walked into my room and walked over to my phone, nothing. I tried my email, nothing. I fought back the tears and slammed my laptop closed.
After my shower I didn’t feel much better. I closed the door of the bathroom and Laci was sitting on my bed. I jumped and walked over to my empty closet. I had thrown all my clothes away that reminded me of Europe. I slipped on some leggings and a white crop top. Laci hadn’t said a word.
“Do you need anything?” I asked her, now frustrated.
“A shopping buddie.” she gave me a cheeky smile and stood up. “Please! We need to have a little fun!”
“No,” I pointed at the door, “Go.”
“Crissy Daniels! Why are you such a sour puss?”
“I am sorry I am not in the mood to party. News flash, I feel like crap,” I finally snapped, “I don’t have the strength to pretend to be happy. Why? You may ask well, this is funny, I will have you know I have not heard from my,” I made quotations in the air, “‘Husband’ since I got here I need him by my side and I can’t... I just... I-I.” I began to cry. Laci ran up to me and hugged me.
