I park my car in between to small cars, only then realizing how big my Rover is. I get out grabbing my phone and keys, turn and lock the doors and make my way in side the building.
The first thing I see is Mr. Anderson standing by the doors greeting everyone walking in. As soon as I step up next he greets me with a hand shake "Ms. Harris you made it! Right on time too! He says. I give him a questionable look "on time?" I look at my phone it only say 7:23 pm.. "Yes! I have to introduce you to our staff since your our only new teacher this year! All eyes will be on you!" He states. "Oh that's not necessary! I could just meet everyone one on o-", he cuts me off "Nonsense! It's a tradition! Don't worry it's no trouble at all!"
Before I could say anything he's grabbed me by the arm, and pulling me into a larger room with tables everywhere and more people than I thought worked at the school. Mr.Anderson lets go of my arm when we get on to this little platform with a stand and a Mic attached. He taps on the Mic and clears his throat. "Hello staff members of Corner High! I am so happy to see everyone here tonight, hopefully you all feel the same about seeing me!", everyone laughs. "Anyway I'm very excited for another school year and wouldn't choose a better group of people to do it with than all of you! Now before we get started, like every year we get new teachers and need to give a great Corner high welcome! This year, however we only have one new teacher, I'd like to introduce our newbie member on the social studies hall and newbie geography teacher.. Ms. Shelbie Harris!" He steps to the side and starts clapping as well as everyone else, he motions for me to go up to the stand. "Oh um, Hi. I didn't know I was suppose to say anything so I'll try to make it quick. Like Mr.Anderson said, I'm Shelbie Harris and I'm the new geography teacher and am really grateful to be here with all of you and can't wait to get to know all of you! Thank you have a nice evening!", and then I stepped away and made my way off the platform shaking hands with Mr.Anderson. I found my way to an empty seat and sat while Mr.Anderson went on talking about his expectation for the school year and all of us.
"And with that I leave you all to enjoy some good food provided by our lovely lunch ladies and other staff members! Enjoy the evening! Thank you!" With that we all stood and clapped and then everyone made there way over to the tables with food. I just stood there for a minute before I felt a tap on my shoulder, "Well if it isn't the newbie!" A familiar voice said, "Oh Mr.Horan! I see your enjoying my new name!" I laugh with him. "Yes! I think it suits you very well!" He say matter of fact.
We soon got our food and sat down at the end of one of the tables talking about the classes we took in college. "Ok but there has to be one thing you don't like about teaching in general?" He asks. "Well I'm not to fond of-" then is was cut off, "Well Mr.Horan trying to hide the newbie from everyone else?"this tall muscular man says as he shakes Mr.Horan by the shoulders a bit. "Not at all we were just talking," Mr. Horan states. "Well in that case you won't mind me introducing me to the lovely lady." He says sending me a wink.. Which would would usually make me blush but instead creeped me out. A lot.
"Sure. Charles this is Shelbie Harris our new geography teacher on the social studies hall." Mr. Horan states with a small smile that soon fades away once Mr. Charles starts talking. "Geography? Hm I wouldn't mind doing some exploring myself.." He says licking his lips.. Making me want to go home and shower in boiling water. " I'm Reece Charles. Physical Education teacher." He grins proudly of himself. "I can make you sweat like never before." He says. I immediately talk back "by what playing dodge ball.", not even realizing I had said it out loud. Mr.Horan set over there laughing almost red in the face. Mr. Charles get a bit red too but just laughs nervously. "Well anyways if you need me I'll be over that way." He points by a table full of other grown men. "Will do." I say in hopes that he'll walk away. He's gone.
We try to continue on with our conversation, getting interrupted a few times with other teachers coming up and greeting me and starting conversation. At the moment I'm in a conversation with a Math teacher telling me about a course she taught over the summer with 200 students in one room. Why would someone do that? Anyways she's going on then I snap out of whatever zone I'm in when she says something about Mr.Horan. "Sorry could you repeat that?" I asked "Yeah, all I was saying is that he looks incredibly good this year." "What do you mean by that? Hasn't he always looked like he does now?" I asked. "Oh heavens no! How do I say it? Last year he looked basically like a small fragile 15 year old but now it's like something hit him and he looks like a man should. I mean if I didn't know him already you would think he was a model who ended up being a teacher!" I just laugh at her words. "He's a fully grown man there's no way he use to look 15!" She shakes her head. "I'm serious go to our library and look at him from previous years. You'll see!" I just laugh and look around the room only to find him already staring at me. I debate whether or not to smile or look away but it's too late he's already on his way over to the table with me and Mrs. Stewart.
"Hello ladies, what's the topic of this discussion?" Mr. Horan asks. "Umm school budgets!" Mrs. Stewart shouts.
Good job being convincible.
