Lost at sea : a poem

Our eyes are thirsty.
We're withering flowers,
plucked albeit not cherished.
Leaving only smoke,
only empty promises
in our wake,
lazing through empty streets
I lean onto you
you lean onto me.
We were never
creatures of apathy.
Apathy is a drug
& we want to be so painless,
so numb
that we find ways.
Cowardice
isn't an easy way out
for people with a conscience
that never dies.
But we take that path anyway and we take it with whatever numbs us for the night.
So here we are,
into each other's arms
looking for numbness
in our tongues,
our bodies.
I find only a need,
you find only a desperation
for relevance.
You feel like more than flesh.
Taken aback I delve deeper,
my curiosity still sharp in my gut.
You're looking for salvation
you're looking for meaning.
We're two lost ships
looking for the same shore.
