"Seriously Elle. You're supposed to be helping me with this cheer. Not lying on your ass!" She all but barked at me. I laid on the turf for a little while longer, praying that she would carry on. When I didn't hear any movement, I opened one eye only to see a very angry Jada staring down on me. Flashing her a cheeky little grin, I stood to face the beast.
"Jada," I started, "you know that I don't know a lick about cheer, right? I just came out here to look at all the hot guys." I gestured towards the now vacant field. She rolled her eyes and faked a pout, but didn't say anything. After a few more seconds of just standing there, I decided to help. Her face instantly lit up and drug me to where she previously stood causing me to let out a small yelp. Bitch.
We stayed out in the field for at least another half hour until one of the football coaches told us to leave. As we packed up our belongings and drank our water, we heard what sounded like footsteps coming from the field house. Sure enough, a few of the football players ran onto the field tossing a ball back and forth. Seriously? This is why we have to leave?
"Elliott, I know what you're thinking and trust me, it isn't worth it. Let's just go get cleaned up and grab a bite." I was abruptly snapped out of my thoughts at the mention of food.
"Wow," I mused. "You must really like me." Then I gave her my world famous wink and raced her to the locker room. Once we showered and got cleaned up, we made our way to the parking lot. Jada climbed into her signature yellow bug and I couldn't help admire her.
To say she was beautiful was an understatement. Her chocolate skin paired perfectly with her light brown eyes and her straight, dark hair that fell just a few inches past her shoulders. Not only was she gorgeous, she was smart as hell. I wish I had her brain sometimes. Sometimes. I would say that we're polar opposites, but we aren't. Honestly, I think there's a chance we could possibly be long lost sisters; as cliche as it sounds.
I put my orange duffle bag in the backseat of my FJ Cruiser and climbed into the front seat. Realizing that I had no idea where we were going to eat, I rolled my window down only to see Jada doing the exact same thing. Great minds think alike I suppose.
"So I was thinking about that little sandwich place on the corner of Nueces and University. Sound good?" Gosh I love that place. I looked at her and waited for a response. She gave me a quick nod and rolled up her window as I did the same. It'll take about fifteen minutes to get there from school, so I decided to turn my radio up a little louder.
We were finished eating almost as quickly as we arrived. Once our stomachs were full and our bills were paid, we left the restaurant. That's when my phone buzzed. Ignoring the text, I checked the time. Six thirty-eight.
"I have to go. " I told Jada.
"Why? I thought we were going to hang out at mine." Oh right. I forgot all about that.
"I have to pick up Skylar by seven. Rain check?"
She stood there for a moment, probably thinking of some way to guilt trip me into staying. "Well," she began. "Just bring her over. I have a lot of things I need to finish in my room and could use a little help." She concluded with a soft smile, no doubt trying to seal the deal. Contemplating the down side of her plea, and not really seeing one, I gave her a quick "yes" and headed off.
When I arrived Mrs. Miriam's, Skylar decided she didn't want to let go of a little toy truck. After another five minutes of playing tug of war with her, I managed to divert her attention towards a cookie I saw in her bag.
"Oh Elliott, I do wish you could stay longer! It's been so long since I've last seen you." Mrs. Miriam says. I let out a small giggle at this.
"Mrs. Miriam, I just saw you last Monday." With Skylar following close behind, I grabbed her bag a walked towards the front door. Mrs. Miriam beat me to it and opened it for us, ushering us out.
"Darling I know! It's been forever."Leave it to her to be this dramatic. "Oh alright," she sighed. "But y'all better come to see me soon. I'm not going to be twenty-nine forever!" She gave me a not so subtle wink and shut the door.
With Skylar holding on to my pinky, we finally made it to my car.
"Okay Sky, I need you to hold this while I fix your seat. Can you do that for me?" She nodded her head vigorously while gripping her backpack in her tiny hands. Aftrr I managed to adjust the seat, I took the bag from. Skylar and placed it next to her seat. "You ready to go?" I asked in my baby voice. Man, I love little kids.
On our way to Jada's, we managed to get caught at every red light. Skylar was getting impatient and quite frankly, so was I.
"Ellie! Pee pee." Seriously. Now? I told her to hold it just a little until we foind another convenient store. "Ellie! Pee pee, please!" Okay Elliot. Think. I don't think she's wearing a pull-up at the moment so if she lets go, I could have a pretty nasty mess to clean up. Ugh. I looked my my rearview mirror to see Skylar shaking her legs around. Quickly I pulled over alongside the road and removed her from her seat and her bottoms. I lowered myself towards the ground in a squat like motion. Please let this work.
"Hey, can you squat like me? Hm, can you squat like Ellie? Now you can pee" She nodded and squatted and I'm sure you can figure out the rest. Wow, I'm pretty great.
"Finally! Y'all took forever and a day to get here." Jada exclaimed as soon as we stepped through the door.
"Yeah well we had to take a little pit stop on the side of the road." Before I could say anything else, Mrs. Thatcher barged into the room.
"Oh, Elliot how are you- who's this?" She asked, pointing at Skylar. Mrs. Thatcher ran up to her and picked her up, placing Skylar on her hip. "Don't tell me your mom had a baby cooking in that belly and didn't tell me. I thought we were BMF's. What the hell is a BMF? Best Milf Friend. "It stands for 'Best Mom Friends.' Cute, right?"
I only laughed in response. "No Mrs. T, this is my cousin. My aunt needed a babysitter this weekend and I couldn't say no."
"Okay mom, Elliot and I are going to ny room." Jada piped in.
"Can I play with Skylar for a bit? She's just so cute I want to bite her cheeks!"
"That's fine. You go ahead."
"Yay! Come on baby, lets go play." And with that, Jada's mother left.
"Alright. Up to my room."
