The next day, I was excited to go to school, to my surprise. Never in my life had I thought I could actually look forward to school. I wasn’t the smartest person out there, but I wasn’t an airhead either. Teachers never praised me nor scolded me. Honestly they didn’t pay me much attention at all.

It used to bother me that no one would talk to me. However, ever since the start of summer, things have been different. I willingly chose to sit by myself, in the library, where no one would bother me. I didn’t think it was safe to have friends at this point in my life.  It would be a friendship based on secrets and lies. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti-social; I just prefer to hang out solo.

As I walked on the pavement to school, I couldn’t help but think about the boy I had saved the day before. He could have been hit by the car if I hadn’t pulled him back. It’s all thanks to my-

“Ouch.” I said when I walked into something.

“What is it with you and walking into me?” said a male voice.

“Hey.” I said with a sheepish smile. “I’m sorry, I day dream a lot.”

“I’ve noticed. Yesterday you just kind of stared off into space.”

I tried to remember what he was talking about, and then I remembered the first time I bumped into him.

“Thanks for saving Ben yesterday. He could have died.” He said with a sincere look on his face.

“How could I not? He’s a kid, kids don’t know how to look after themselves.”

“Haha, yeah. Anyway my class is this way-” he pointed to the right with his thumb “-So I will see you around, girl with no name.”

I didn’t realise what he was talking about. Class? I looked at my surroundings and realised that we were actually already inside school. I walked to my locker, and then went to class.

When lunch came around I went to the library, just like every other day I had been doing and opened up a book I had began to read. Ten minutes later a shadow came over me. Since no one talked to me much, because everyone already had friends, I assumed it was Owen, since he was the only person who talked to me. However, when I looked up I was surprised to see a girl.

She was pretty. She was a petite girl with red curly hair falling over her shoulders. What surprised me though, were her eyes. Just like mine, her eyes were a unique colour. Hers were a sort of light blue mixed with purple,  wheras mine were green and blue near my pupil and dark blue on the edges.

While I was examining her eyes, she spoke up.

“Do you always sit by your self?”

“Uh-huh.”

I was so sure she would laugh at me. But she surprised me.

“Me too. I just don’t seem to find anyone interesting. All these people are too cliché.”

Then why was she talking to me? I voiced my question.

“You interest me. You seem different.”

I wanted to ask her why, but she turned around and left, her red curls bouncing on her back. I stared at her back, trying to figure out what was so interesting about me. She couldn’t know my secret, could she? I thought to myself. Shaking it off, I went back to my book, but the thoughts of the girl with red hair never left my mind. Who was she? Why hadn’t I seen her before? It’s hard to miss hair that colour, right?

At the end of the school day, I walked to my locker. While putting my book in, and taking out the ones I needed to do my homework from, my mind drifted on again.

I was sorting my books, when suddenly a voice interrupted me.

“Boo!” said the voice, causing me to jump. I already knew who it was.

“Not funny, Owen. I almost hit my head on the locker door.”

I snapped back to reality, and continued sorting my books, I put them in my bag, making sure I had the right ones. Realising that I mixed two books up, I attempted to swap the two around. Before I could continue sorting out my books, a voice interrupted me.

“Boo!” said the voice, almost causing me to jump, except I saw it coming.

“Not funny, Owen.”

“Not fair! Not only did you already know it was me, you didn’t even get a tiny bit scared! How do you do that?” He questioned, faking anger. I tried to hold in my laughter.

“I have magic powers!” I finally laughed, I couldn’t keep it in any longer.

“If you had said that with a straight face, I might just have believed you.” Suddenly I began to avoid eye contact. But while avoiding his eyes, I spotted a flash of red.

“hey, can I ask you a question?” I said, with curiosity.

“You just-”

“-did. I know! I’m being serious!” I said, getting frustrated.

“Yeah, sure.”

“Who is that?” I say with curiosity, while discretely pointing to the red head mystery girl.

“Oh, that’s Iris.”

What? How-

“How Ironic right? Have you seen her eyes. I’m pretty sure that’s what her parents named her after...”

“You’ve read my mind.” I said laughing. I looked at my watch, and my eyes went wide. “I-I have to go! I’m going to be late!”

Maybe I was over reacting, but I really did enjoy spending time with my grandma, our bond since the start of summer had definitely strengthened.

“Do you want a ride?” he suddenly asked.

“Ummm, I don’t know...”

“Come on. It’s my fault you’re late anyway.” He tried to encourage me.

“Fine.” I huffed out.

“But I still need to sort my books out. I will be a minute.” I quickly added.

“I’ll wait in the car.” He responded, before walking away.

I turned back to replace those two book, then I shut my locker door. Before I could walk away a voice stopped me.

“Hey, wait!” I saw the familiar red haired girl, whose name was Iris.

“Hey, what’s up? I’m kind of in a hurry.”

“Yeah, I could tell. Look I just wanted to warn you.”

“Warn me?” I asked, confused. What did she mean warn me?

“Stay away from Owen.”

“What?” I said laughing. “Is he like your boyfriend or something, because there’s nothing happening...”

“No. I just-I mean-ugh look just- It’s for your own good, and you should keep away from others in this school too, if you know what’s good for you.”

“Are you threatening me?”

“No! I’m warning you. Just stay away from them, ok?”

“But not from you?” She shook her head, her curls bouncing as she did so.

“Why?”

“They’re not like me and you, they don’t understand.” She said a stern look in her odd eyes. Before I could question further, she once again walked away, her red curls bouncing on her back.

Her words played in my mind. Once again she left me thinking and wondering about her.

They’re not like me and you, they don’t understand.

Did her words have a double meaning?
