Chapter five: Flight the captor
He turned and fled for the door but Virus was quicker. Within moments Flight was pinned to the ground, a talon around his neck and a talon clamped over his snout.
"Mmph!" he cried muffled by the talon around his snout, "Humph wmphs!"
"Permission to kill my lady?" Virus asked, "Cuz I really want to."
"No, he may be useful. He could get us into the SkyWing palace." Mystery said stepping forward. She flexed her powerful talons, "Why are you here dragon of the sky? What is it about us that interests you so much?" She hoped that "Dragon of the sky" sounded imposing. Flight pointed to the talon around his mouth and raised an eyebrow unimpressed.
"Your highness, shall I let him speak?" Virus asked.
"Yes but if he makes any noises that alert the SkyWings, kill him." Mystery said, certain that killing was imposing enough.
Flight pretended that Virus had been choking him and gasped for air. "Wow man you sure have a grip! I wasn't going to tell on you! I just wanted to know what you were. Lets see, you have lots of horns, like an IceWing, but they are curvy like mine, you all seem to have different shades of yellow and purple, nothing I've seen before. Oh and there's too many of you for you guys to all be hybrids." He narrowed his eyes suspiciously, "Falcon told me a story about a hybrid like you who claimed to be a 'DreamWing' Falcon and the old commander killed her though. What's a DreamWing anyway?"
"SkyWings, so poky and prody. Why can't you leave things you don't understand alone?" Vault sighed wearily. Mystery felt sick. Falcon had killed a DreamWing. And worse Mystery felt like that DreamWing could have been a friend.
"Because those 'things we don't understand' might wipe out our WHOLE TRIBE!" Flight nearly shouted.
"Silence SkyWing! We are following the orders of the princess and queen." Spector growled.
Flight stared at Mystery in disappointment, "Guessing you're the princess huh? And to think I almost trusted you! So, What really happened to those four SkyWings huh?"
"Well I-"
"No need to answer I already know! You and your precious secret tribe KILLED THEM! Don't you know how I feel?! They were close friends!"
Mystery wasn't used to the feeling rising inside her. She didn't know what to call it. Her tribe had done this. No, her mother had done this! She didn't know how to react. Everything in her told her not to believe it, to trust in her mother. Mystery couldn't stand it. "Don't kill him!" She cried and then she fled. I- I have to escape this feeling! I can't do it my mother loves me! How could she do this? I don't know what to do! And she flew. Away from the sadness, away from the tribe she was ordered to kill, and away from Flight's hurtful words.
She landed on a hill where she collapsed in a miserable heap. Dragons don't cry often, but when they do the tears are said to be prophetic. Mystery cried hard that night, and when she finally stopped she noticed she had a visitor. Standing in front of her was a lizard. It was huge, half as long as Mystery, maybe more.
"Oh go away scaly, I'm not in the mood for a midnight snack." Mystery snapped, She shot a bolt of white- purple fire at the lizards tail, missing by half an inch. The scaly beast was unimpressed.
" Grrr! Go away! I can eat you yah know!" She growled at the lizard but it just came closer and climbed onto the princesses back. It's scales were strangely dragon like. Oh yeah, I remember this lizard from my scrolls. It's called... ummm... a Komodo Dragon.
"Well you are kind of cute, for a lizard. I think I'll call you Dragon, is that alright Dragon?" Dragon, of course, didn't respond. He flicked his forked tongue in and out. Then he made a high-pitched growling noise. It sounded like a stomach growling.
"Does that mean your hungry?"
"Growl."
"What do Komodo dragons eat?"
"Growl"
"Mice?"
"Growl"
"I'm starting to think you don't talk."
"Growl"
"Well of course you don't talk. Why am I talking to you?" Mystery sighed. She knew exactly why she was talking to a lizard. She was extremely lonely. She felt like the worst dragon in Pyrrhia. And apparently, Dragon was the only one who didn't mind. Well at least she had him. She got up and stretched. The sun was just peaking around the clouds.
"Dragon today is a new day! I will return to my troop and order them to fly to the Sky Palace! And we will WIPE OUT the SkyWings FOR ALL ETERNATY!" That last line startled a great many birds, "Oh look breakfast." Mystery already changed back to SkyWing.
"MYSTERY!" Vault tackled her in a hug, "Are you hurt? You scared us to death!"
"No I'm fine! Really."
"Then what were you thinking lizard brains?!" Vault dragged her to the pool and dunked her. Dragon was not pleased with that. He hissed and dug his claws into Mystery's shoulders.
Hey! Ouch! No! Wait! I brought back breakfast!" Mystery opened the leaf pouch she made and showed them the many birds she had caught.
"Wonderful your highness!" Spector oozed, "A great breakfast for- LOOK OUT! There is a giant beast on your back!" He stepped forwards, "You must have forgotten to kill the scaly dragon-lizard thing."
"No! That's my pet! His name is Dragon. Absolutely NO EATING DRAGON!" Dragon flicked his tongue out and hissed. Everyone looked unhappy about that.
"Wonderful! I see you're all happy. Shall we continue to plan the end of my tribe?" Flight was tied up securely.
"First I will tell everyone we are leaving and make up an excuse for Flight's absence." Mystery stepped towards the outpost door, "Be ready to leave when the whistle sounds."
