"Mel? Can you help your father into the car?" My mom shouts up the stairs, holding a big box.
"Coming!" I yell back as I finish putting my things in boxes identical to the one my mother has. I grab as many as I can and sprint down the stairs, not wanting to keep my dad waiting. I placed them at the bottom of my stairs and grabbed the one on my fathers lap.
"I had that one. If you are going to spoil me, I am never going to get better!" My dad fake pouts.
Laughing, I hand him back the box.
"If you say so!" I take the handles of his wheelchair and push him towards the door.My twin brother opens it for me, then sprints to his room.
I roll my eyes. He seems to always be in a rush, even if he has no where to go. I get outside to our beat up mercedes and open the trunk. I pull down my fathers ramp that was built when he first got sick.
"Up, up, up and away!" He says as I push him up the ramp as fast as possible and stop short right before we hit the front seat.
We laugh as I take the box from him again and set the brakes on his chair. Still slightly out of breath, but smiling, I get out of the car and lifted the ramp back up.
"Be right back dad. I will get mom to turn on the car so you don't get too hot."
My dad thanks me, sweat already beginning to form from the hot California air. Although it was the end of summer, it felt like the beginning, the hot sun making the car stuffy.
One of the moving guys took the box from me as I head in to tell my mom to turn on the AC.
Once everything is in the moving van, Matt and I run around the house and double check to make sure its empty. Well, Matt runs while I walk. I am happy that I get to leave, but I will miss California.
When I get to my room I take one last look at its pink wallpaper and close the door, breathing deeply.
My mom honks and I run outside towards my new life. A better life.
