Gale Hawthorn was torn with conflicting emotions. No matter how much he hurt inside, he could not take his eyes off of the television screen that sat in front of him. Images of his best friend, Katniss, filled the screen. Gale felt proud that his friend had survived this long. So many kids had already lost their lives in this dreadful game. But not Katniss. She was a survivor. Gale also felt jelous, though. Every time he glanced at the screen, he saw Katniss in the arms of that dreadful baker boy, Peeta Mellark.  Gale flinched every time he thought that Katniss could actually have feelings for Peeta. Gale knew that his friend deserved better.

The screen now showed Katniss and Peeta, holding each other, kissing each other. Gale couldn't take this any longer. He got up quietly, as to not wake his mother or siblings. He walked out the door and headed off to the woods.

Gale darted through the woods until he reached his destination; his and Kat's hunting spot. Gale sat down, taking slow, steady breaths. The fresh air always made him feel better, except for tonight. He couldn't stop thinking about the truth. Katniss only thought of him as a friend, a hunting partner. After all he had done for her family, she only thought of him as a friend.

Gale woke up the next morning, quickly realizing that he had fallen asleep in the forest. Judging by the position of the sun it was nearly noon. His mother would be worried. Gale quickly got up and began walking as quickly as possible.  When Gale walked into his house, he was greeted with hugs and sobs. His mother held him tightly, telling him that she thought he had been caught by the Peacekeepers. His younger siblings asked him where he had been, why he had left.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 For a moment, Gale let his thoughts stray from Katniss. He thought of his Mother, and how terrified she must have been to wake up and realize that her son was not home. He thought of his siblings and how they must have shared their mothers's fear. Gale was glad that he had people in his life who loved him and needed him.
