Chapter 2
I saw the shape of a girl through the rain, which was now picking up speed (as did I). I knew it was Terra by the way she shifted from foot to foot, gently swaying and enjoying the gloomy weather under the umbrella being held.
"Hey," I muttered, getting arm's length away. As she turned around, I slid under the shelter of her umbrella. Her curly auburn hair was loose in ringlets around her head, reaching just past her shoulders. A peach-colored flowery headband held it away from her icy blue eyes.
She smiled in return. The first thing I noticed was her hearing aide - not that it was new, but it was a different color. It was coral. Interesting.
"New hearing aide?" I asked. She nodded and signed Yes, it was time for something new. I laughed.
Terra had been my best friend for years. She'd been through it all with me - and vice versa. She had been born deaf, and wasn't used to speaking; her hearing aide gave her some noises, but they weren't clear enough to make out exact words. Therefore, the aide had to be used in conjunction with her fabulous lip reading skills.
She scrunched her eyebrows at me and signed Why? I rolled my eyes.
"Mom's being difficult again." I stated it flatly. "She just doesn't understand."
It's part of us being teenagers, signed Terra. Part of us growing up is not being understood by our parents and having to find our own way a little bit. That's how we grow. I sighed and turned, looking for any sign of the bus. Terra was right. Even if she had a "love and tolerate all" mindset, she was completely right. I nodded at her, getting a smile of approval at my understanding.
We waited without further coversation. Terra had stopped swaying now, thank god, because her shawl kept brushing by my arm and was getting annoying - even if it was super cute.
I heard the familiar screech of brakes as the bus rounded the corner. It was your typical big, yellow bus. It had a white top, and a small, white, flashing light centered on the roof.
As it pulled up and came to a stop, Terra motioned for me to go first. I heard her close the umbrella as I left its safety and climbed the slick steps of the bus, nodding at the driver.
I plopped down in a seat in the midsection of the bus. Terra sat in front of me - she knew I liked having my own space. The bus pulled away from the curb, and we were on our way.
It was so gross outside, I had decided, that the only thing that would do in terms of music would be Black Veil Brides. I plugged my earbuds into my phone, and brought up The Mortician's Daughter. Its sweet sound flooded my ears, and rocked me right to sleep with the gentle bouncing of the bus.
