As I bustled down the crowded streets, I thought about what the ‘important’ meeting was about. John, my agent, had wanted me to be at the agency pronto. The news could be horrible or fantastic; I had yet to find out.
I walked into the lobby of the agency’s building and sat down waiting for my turn. The secretary brought me to a room with a long, polished wood table. I sat somewhat near the door.
I waited for awhile, until someone came through the door. He wasn’t alone; a few men in business suits came in behind him. He wore jeans and a checkered t-shirt. I only recognized one of them; John Michaels, my agent. The two men in suits and the man in the jeans sat across from me and John.
“Cassidy, this is Scooter Braun.” John said, gesturing to the man in jeans.
“Hello Mr. Braun” I said politely.
“Hello Cassidy!”
“Well, in case you haven’t already figured it out, we’re here to discuss something concerning your career.” John said.
‘Well, you see Cassidy, I work in the music industry and one of my clients is going on tour in about a month. John sent us a video clip of you dancing and my client loved it. He wanted me to get you to agree to come audition in LA to audition. Auditions are beginning tomorrow late afternoon. We’d like to have you join us at the auditions. They should only last for a few hours tomorrow since they begin so late in the afternoon. If our choreographer likes you then you have good chances to be on tour.’ Mr. Braun said being serious but with a hint of a smile on his lips. “Since my client has no say in whom we pick to go on tour we decided to allow you to audition. If it went his way then you’d be on the tour immediately but he isn’t in a position to make that call.”
“Wow! This is incredible I’d love to audition! I honestly can’t thank you enough for giving me this opportunity!” My excitement was surely portrayed clearly on my face.
“You’ll have a few perks that some of the other dancers may not. My client wanted you to feel at home so he arranged quite a few things for you specially. I hope to see you sometime soon!” He checked something on his phone and then placed it back in his pocket. “Well, I must be off. If you have any questions, feel free to ask John. He is fully aware of all of the details.” And with that said, he rose from his seat and walked back to the lobby, followed by the men in suits.
“We have arranged everything for you so all you have to do is pack. You’ll leave late tomorrow afternoon to go to Los Angeles. That’s where the crew is and where the rehearsals are.” He spoke while riffling through papers and handing me the flight information.
It’s lucky I’d recently graduated from high school and I was only a few weeks from being legal. I had a late birthday so I was only 17.
“Thank you so much for all of this! I really need to start packing so I’ve got to go!”
“Bye Cassidy, good luck and have fun!” He said collecting all the remaining papers.
I walked home, the smile never leaving my face. I stopped at a café to get a coffee, since I’d be up most of the night packing for a possibly long ‘vacation’. My mind was on overdrive, going from excited to nervous to excited again. The meeting was playing in my head on repeat and I didn’t have any desire to stop it. I quickly dialed Lucy’s number. She was my best friend and I needed to tell her what was going on.
‘Hey Luce, how’s it going?’
‘Pretty good Cass, so what’s up?’ She definitely knew something was up.
‘Well, I’m going to LA’
‘What!’
‘Yeah, I just got offered a job dancing. It’s not secured but I’m auditioning. I have a flight tomorrow afternoon.’
