prologue
He looked at her, afraid of what her response was going to be to his presence. He mumbled out a quick "hey", his patience and courage wearing thin. He shouldn't be here, he knew that. He had known for a while that she might never forgive him, and that she most likely will never give him the time of day again. He had known that he had ruined every chance she had ever given him, and he did feel guilty. But her being here is a good sign, right? Her standing here, her even breathing in the general vicinity of where he was had to be a good sign.
His blue eyes looked into her miserable hazel ones, searching for the girl he used to know. The one who always had this cheeky grin on her face and a gleam in her eye. He was looking at the shell of the person she once was. Her eyes that used to be one of his favorite things about her - with the way you could see the colors shift when she would get excited, turning a bright green whenever any emotion besides lust and anger floated behind them - but now all he could see was the way they had sunken into her high cheekbones, purple bags enveloping them with a cold hug.
Everything he loved about his beautiful Adelaide had faded away. The natural roundness of everything about her that gave her her sex appeal had fallen, her body looking sickly thin. Even the roundness in her face had washed away, leaving her cheeks hollow and worn. The natural pink tint behind her skin - whether it be her cheeks or her lips - had slipped away, leaving a pale beauty in its wake. With the paleness of her skin, though, he could see all the things he never saw before. Like the heart shaped freckle below her right eye, or the way the scar on the tip of her nose dragged down to her lip instead of ending at her nostril like he had always thought before. Everything about this girl - his girl - was wrong. You couldn't even tell that she was the girl he once loved. His girl was bright and vivacious. Not whatever this girl was.
A smile used to constantly lay upon her tinged lips, a natural smirk always falling upon the plump things whenever she wasn't paying attention to anything and her face was relaxed.
Now, this girl has a frown permanently etched onto her pink lips.
Her eyes are nothing but dull and emotionless. And when she spoke his name, all he could hear was the sound of her heart breaking every time their eyes locked.
The girl he used to love was no longer here in this world. She was just a beautiful memory that he would forever cherish.
