I walked into my first period class just as the second bell rang.
Whitney and Britney eyed me meanly. But I shrugged it off and slumped into my seat in the back of the room.
The announcements came on and the woman blandly warbled about the day's lunch, club activities and such.
When she droned about the upcoming school dance, everyone got a bit excited.
It's the biggest dance every year. The theme this year is Masquerade.
Everyone goes, if you don't, you're socially shunned and (no one) talks to you the rest of the year.
All the girls make a big deal of it and drag the boys into it. I've never gone, so I was socially shunned last year. Really didn't matter anyways. No one dares talk to the Twin's cousin. Not if they value their social life and at this school social standing is everything.
I sigh and secretly popped my earbuds in.
Class started and the teacher lectured us on the increase in population in India and how it affects the country's/world economy.....blah blah blah.
I saw Britney and Whitney gossiping and showing pictures dresses of on their phones to their little posse.
I rolled my eyes to myself. In my opinion, the dresses were too neon, sparkly, and poofy and looked kind of ugly.
the bell rang, and I practically jumped up from my seat and ran out the classroom before Britney and Whitney forced me to be their slave and carry their books.
I quickly go to my next class, then the next until lunch. Where I snuck out to behind the cafeteria kitchen.
Catrina had placed my lunch on our table for me.
I peeked inside and saw Chinese dumplings, rice and a little cake.
I ate fast and then set to work. Eventually I finished and I listened to it once more, checking for mistakes, before I burned it onto a cd.
Before I knew it, lunch period was over and I had to go to my next class.
As I reentered the building Britney and Whitney stopped me.
"little Mickenzie. Where have you been? We almost had to carry our books!" Britney whined.
"emphasis on 'almost'" I snapped.
"ooh. Grouchy today, are we?" she said.
"just leave me alone." I said wearily.
"ooh. Can't do that." Whitney sighed.
"you see, a little birdie saw you in the hall looking-" Britney said.
"at a flyer for the Masquerade ball. And we just-" Whitney cut in.
"can't let you go. That would ruin our popularity. Sorry....actually we're not sorry." Britney finished.
They both laughed meanly and left.
I stood in the hall for a minute longer.
I actually was kind of interested in going. I'm not that girly, but the thought of transforming into a beautiful mystery girl was kind if appealing to me. No one would know who I was, and maybe someone would talk to me or invite me to dance.
I pretend not to care, but it actually gets really depressing talking to no one but Britney and Whitney who bully me constantly.
I had even sketched a dress and mask.
I sighed and shuffled my books before heading off to class. I was late.
When school ended, I caught the stupid bus home and immediately went down to my bedroom.
