I sighed as my dad and I pulled up to our new house. "We're here!!" He cheered.
"Yay," I said sarcastically.
"Come on Zoe. It won't be that bad." My dad reached over and grabbed my hand. "I know this isn't easy for you. I know you hate that we had to move but...."
"I know you can't help where your job takes you. I understand." I said nodding before getting out of the car. I opened the trunk but stopped when I heard voices.
"Look! New neighbors!" I turned to see a group of guys looking at me. I turned red when I watched as they checked me out. I looked down and realized I was in a flowy tank top and a pair of short shorts. I grabbed a box from the back and took it inside, ignoring the feeling of those guys staring at me. When I walked back outside I saw my dad talking to the boy in a yellow tank top and another boy in a gray and red baseball tee.
"There she is!!" My dad said pointing at me.
"Oh no." I whispered. I waved before walking to the car and grabbing another box.
"Zoe, come over here honeybee!" I silently groaned as my dad called me by my childish nickname.
I walked over, not bothering to put down the box. "Please don't call me that." I sighed walking up to them.
"Sorry honey. Meet our neighbors!" He said cheerily.
"We live next to a frat house..... Awesome." I said sarcastically. Most girls would love living by a frat house but I'm not like most girls.
"Nice basketball trophies." Said the one with the red sleeves.
I looked down to see the box I was holding was the one with all my trophies. "Thanks." I mumbled.
At least it wasn't a box of my underwear.....
"How long have you played?" Asked the guy in the yellow.
"Since I could hold a basketball."
"So your pretty good huh?" Said baseball tee. I just shrugged.
"Oh she isn't giving herself enough credit!" My dad praised. "She was the point guard all through middle and high school. She made varsity as a freshman and became captain her junior year. She took her high school team to state both her junior and senior year. She even got a scholarship to play for a university in Miami but due to my job we had to move."
With that I turned on my heel and left. Before I got inside I heard the boy in the baseball tee ask, "I'm guessing she isn't taking the move very well?"
"Yeah," my father sighed. "I feel terrible about making her leave her friends, her job and her scholarship but I can't afford to live here and have her live back in Miami. It hasn't been easy on her. Especially since her mother passed the summer before her senior year." I didn't hear what the guys said as the front door shut. I leaned against it and took a deep breathe. When I peaked out the window the boy in the baseball tee was looking at the house with something in his eyes I couldn't recognize. Pity? Understanding?
***** Two Days Later *****
I decided to put on a tank top and some shorts and go outside to shoot some hoops. About half an hour later the boy with brown hair (I still hadn't learn those boys' names.) came outside.
"Hey!" He called. I stopped and turned to see him walking over.
"Oh umm hi." I said as I shot a three pointer.
"Nice! Nothing but net!" He shouted as he caught the ball. I couldn't help but laugh as he started dribbling the ball. I watched as he passed the ball between his legs before going for a layup.
"You play?"
"Don't have to sound so surprised." He laughed walking towards me and stopping to shoot another shot. Which he missed.
"Obviously not well." I laughed as I caught the ball and made the same shot he just tried to make.
"Okay Miss Varsity! How about we play a game of Horse? Except whoever misses the shot has to answer whatever question the other asks. Deal?"
I looked at his outstretched hand and smiled. "Deal," I said taking his hand. Before I could let go he spun me around, taking me off guard. I stood there frozen as he turned around and messed with the ball. I cleared my throat before fixing my ponytail.
"Okay, first normal free throw." I watched as he made it. We went back and forth, each making a shot. We went on for at least 25 minutes without either one of us missing.
"Okay, this isn't as fun as I thought it would be." He laughed after I made a three pointer.
With a smirk on my face, I turned around and shot backwards. I turned around and saw that I made it. I looked over and he had his mouth wide open.
"Holy......" I couldn't help but laugh.
"I could do that when I was 14." I winked. I turned around when I heard clapping. I turned to see all the guys from the frat house watching our game.
"How long have you guys been watching?" I cringed.
"Since you first came outside and started shooting!" Called a guy in a beanie.
"Great," I groaned. I turned back to the guy.
"How about if I make this shot, you owe me a date?" The guys all laughed.
"And if you miss? Which you will."
"I owe you a date." I couldn't help but roll my eyes.
"Or," I dragged out. "You all have to help my dad redo the front yard while I sit in a lawn chair sipping lemonade."
He looked over his shoulder at the guys sending him winks. "Challenge accepted." I watched as he turned around and hesitantly looked over his shoulder at least 5 times. He then dribbled the ball several times.
"You gonna go anytime soon?" I laughed. He sent me a playful glare before tossing the ball. His friends laughed as the ball bounced about 2 feet from where he was standing.
"So close!" I joked.
"Wait, really?"
"Yeah. Close to hitting yourself with the ball." I finally chuckled as I picked up the ball that had landed in the grass.
"I guess I'll see you boys Saturday." I smiled. The other guys went back inside as I continued to run through old warmups.
"You know, I still don't know your name." I called as I made a layup.
"It's Dave."
"Well nice to meet you, Dave. Maybe next time we can actually play some one on one and you can try to beat me. Emphasize on the try." I smirked.
"Sounds like a plan." He laughed.
"And maybe we can go to dinner. Not a date but an after game dinner." I said biting my lip.
"That is an even better plan." He sent me a wink before heading back to his frat house.
Maybe living next to a frat house won't be as bad as I thought.
